Warnings: mentions of abuse and neglect

***

Third Person P.O.V.

The last month of the summer holiday was coming up, which meant that Remus and Peter would be arriving at the Potter's within the next few days. Sirius had been more hyper than he usually was with his excitement to see his boyfriend. This had caused James great irritation and exhaustion. The majority of their conversations were about how perfect Remus was—down to the tiniest details that James would have never noticed if it weren't for Sirius' thorough descriptions.

James kept wondering if he were that obnoxious and annoying when he talked about Lily. However, that thought was quickly pushed away with the reminder that he still had all four of his friends. If he had sounded as love-sick as Sirius had been the entire summer, they surely would have left him at some point in the last five years, or at least considered it like he was.

James' P.O.V.

I woke up to a tapping on my window. My hand blindly groped my nightstand until cold metal met my skin. I shoved my glasses lazily on my face as a yawn forced its way out of my mouth. Blinking the sleep out of my eyes, I stood up and walked over to open my window. An owl, that I recognized at Remus', flew in and landed on my bed with a letter tied to his leg. I carefully retrieved it, avoiding his beak. That bird despises everyone except for Remus and Sirius, who bought him for Remus' birthday last year.

The owl stayed perched on my bed, glaring at me as I stared back. We remained with our eyes locked on each other until I realized Remus probably told him to stay until he gets a response. With a sigh, I rolled my eyes and opened Remus' letter.

Prongs,

I was wondering if you and your parents would allow me to come over earlier than we planned. My parents are leaving for a trip on Sunday and won't be back until the end of the holiday. My mum said I would have to go with them if I couldn't find anyone to stay with before they leave.

I have asked Hermes to stay with you until you give him an answer.

Hope your summer is going well and Sirius hasn't given you too much trouble.

-Moony

'Perfect!' I thought as a plan started forming in my mind. I practically dove towards my desk and quickly wrote a response to Remus. I warily held out the letter to Hermes, hoping he'd be happy that I was quick to respond. I could have sworn I saw him roll his eyes as he took the letter in his beak and flew out through my window.

I closed the window with a smirk. 'This should shut Sirius up for a while,' I thought.

I sighed as I spotted Hermes in the distance. I hadn't moved from my window since I sent him away last night. I was too anxious for James' answer. I mean, yes, I would love to go on a trip to Italy, but I would still be isolated. I highly doubt my father would let me walk around without the leash he makes me wear whenever we go out, despite the fact that I'm sixteen years old.

I have been looking forward to seeing Sirius over the holiday since James invited Peter and myself at the end of the school year. It was one of the only things that kept me optimistic for the past two months I've spent locked in my room.

My dad finds it amusing to treat me like a dog. My door has a doggy door carved in it with a flap that locks from the outside. It's much too small for me to fit through, but he locks it anyway. The only time it is opened is to give me food and water, which are both served in plastic dog bowls. I remember the embarrassment I almost experienced when I first arrived at Hogwarts. I had no idea what I was supposed to do with the utensils that were arranged on the table and almost dug into the serving dishes like the canine I was raised to be.
