Arthur was in a library in London, reading The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. He was very caught up in it, and his tea, along with the silence of the library.
England was the kind of man who would rather be alone with a good book than with anything else. He couldn't get enough of the quiet atmosphere of the large room he was in. Well, the temporarily quiet atmosphere.
The door swung open, and you pranced in, singing a song by your favourite band. You didn't notice the now irritated blonde, who sat alone in a far corner of the library by the window.
Once you did notice him, you stopped singing immediately. "Sorry!"
He glared at you. "You interrupted my reading even more by apologising, miss." He said the last word sharply, warningly.
"Sor-" You realised what he said and shut your mouth, rolling your eyes at his rudeness. You began looking for a good book to check out, and spotted what seemed like an interesting one in a high shelf. You stood on your tippy toes to reach it, but failed miserably and ended up pressing your body weight to the shelf, which surprisingly ended up falling opposite to you and into another bookshelf.
You watched with wide eyes, Arthur with pissed ones, as the bookshelves began to fall like dominoes onto one another, making loud slamming and thumping noises.
He cringed as good, expensive, and old books flew to the ground as the bookshelves tilted and fell.
Once they were all down, you let out a distressed whimper. 'I'm in soooo much trouble..'
"That was very, very, very stupid." Arthur snapped, standing and slamming his book shut. He thought that for once, just once, he might be able to escape the crazy, chaotic and loud manor he called his home, and fall into a good book and a good cup of tea. But no, as long as you were here, his day was awful.
He didn't even know you and already hated you!
"I'm sorry for disrupting your reading." You said, looking down guiltily. You didn't mean to ruin the library, or his day. But you somehow always managed to get yourself into some kind of mess or trouble.
He let out a long sigh, feeling bad for being so unintentionally rude to you.
"It's alright, but I guarantee the librarians won't be very happy when they return to see such a mess."
You looked around the room, blushing in embarrassment.
"Will you help me clean it up?" He asked.
You looked up at him in total surprise. What?! You thought for sure that you'd have to clean this up all on your own, but apparently you were wrong. "Yes," You replied, walking over to him.
He got a good look at your face and realised just how pretty you were, and blushed. "Let's hurry along, then. What's your name?"
"(Y/N)."
"I'm Arthur... it's.. it's nice to meet you, (Y/N)."
You gave him a curious look. Since when did he have a stammer..?
"Likewise," You replied quickly, walking over to some fallen books. You two spent most of the day cleaning up the mess, joking around and laughing like friends would do. The tension had eased up between you and him as you cleaned; since you needed to work together after all, and thank heavens the bookshelves were actually very light and Arthur could easily lift them and put them back in their original upright position.
The books?
Well.. that was another story.
Neither of you had a clue how librarians organise their books, so you two just shoved as many books in one shelf as you can and left it at that. He smirked at you, and you at him, both of you knowing the librarians were going to have a field day with this.
"Would you mind if I finished my tea?" He asked softly as you picked up and shoved the final book back in place.
"Of course not." You shot him a friendly smile and walked over to the table he was sitting at, sliding into the chair across from his. He sat back down in his own chair and sipped up the last of his now cold tea.
Normally, he hated his tea cold, but didn't want to act a fool in front of such a pretty bird like you.
"So, Arthur.." You said, looking at his face. His emerald gaze shifted up from the sentence he was on and onto your own face. He hummed in response.
"I was thinking, after you're done with that tea of yours.. maybe... we could like.. go out for dinner or something..?"
His cheeks flared, and he nodded quickly. "Yes, of course I'd love to do that! I mean, why wouldn't I? You're such a joy to be around and all, a dinner sounds lovely! Where would we go? Ooh, I know the perfect little restaurant we could go to on the Thames! But wait, do you like chicken..?" He started rambling on mindlessly about the places you could go.
He snapped out of his nervous rambling when you arched an eyebrow at him. "Are you alright?"
"Yes," He nodded, blushing. "I'm just fine."
You smiled softly and he set his teacup down.
It was empty.
Arthur closed his book again just as you jumped up and grabbed his hand, tugging him out of the library, both of you laughing like idiots.
"Wait!" He exclaimed, skidding to a halt just as you two finished crossing the street.
His sudden stop made you stop as well, and you looked at him curiously. "What is it?"
"I forgot something."
You groaned. "Ugh, you can't be serious!"
He shut you up a second later by pressing his lips to yours in a short, sweet, but loving kiss. After he pulled away from you, you looked at him with surprised eyes and red cheeks.
"That was what I forgot~" He winked, squeezing your hand a little.
After recovering from the little heart spasm you had, you both continued your journey to the restaurant that you would build your relationship in.
And back at the library, Arthurs empty tea cup and closed book in the corner of the room remained in place, giving away its owner immediately as an elderly librarian saw it. She picked up the book and went to put it away in its section, only to realise that everything was out of order.
And for the first time, in 40 years, the old librarian swore.
"That goddamn Kirkland!"
