For some unexplained reason, Yugi slept fairly well that night. Maybe it was the thought of his grandfather being in a better place that made him so content, but as soon as morning rolled around, things became less tranquil.
The body of his Grandfather was nowhere in sight. This sent Gabrielle into even more grief. So much that she ran upstairs and didn't come back down at all. Jacob kept Yugi out of the living room. Yugi didn't know.
His father was the only one at the breakfast table. It felt..odd..without having Solomon there to crack stupid ocean puns and insult Jacob's work profit. Without the presence of the elder, the breakfast table seemed wider, and Yugi just couldn't reach. After the twenty minute silence at breakfast, the black-eyed teen forlornly prepared himself for his school day. Thursdays were Assembly Days, in which the principal would make the teachers gather each student into the auditorium and give an hour speech on the general rules of Domino High, present awards to individual students who win Science Fairs and shit, and make announcements that could and should be announced over the intercom.
Jacob - for the first time in years - drove his son to school. The radio was shut off, recreating the silence at the breakfast table. Deciding that it was awkward enough, Yugi opened his mouth, but the wrong thing came out.
"So, uh..h-how's Ma?"
Jacob heaved a frustrated breath from his nostrils, "She's a hot mess. She refused to get out of the bed this morning; I hope she's okay."
"Yeah, me too." Yugi just couldn't grok what he was feeling. His grandfather was dead, and he felt at ease. It was sickening, and he then began to ponder if this was the feeling that cannibals felt after a meal.
"Listen. When you go in, try not to think on it too much. Just know that he's in a better place now."
I never did catch onto that phrase, and the reason humans use it. You're in the phase of grief, and you may think that he's in a better place, but you know their death was unjust. Maybe it's just a sense of assurance for them. In my opinion, it's just making the situation even worse by lying. Then again, humans don't know where each other go. Half of the time.
Jacob pulled the car to a slow and low screeching halt as Yugi grabbed his bag from on the floor. His dad was right. Even if he wasn't in a better place, it was best not to dwell on it as much. Teen depression rates are already high enough.

It always seemed like there really wasn't a such thing as a teacher or a learning session at Domino High. A lot more insignificant things happened in Domino that Japan drew attention to, rather than decent class time. The lessons had a curt feel to them, and leisure periods like Lunch were unnecessarily stretched, giving unnecessary time to perform unnecessary juvenile crimes on the property. And then the school board wonders why Ushio is so successful in petrifying their students. And even though it was quite obvious that they weren't going to get anything accomplished, students still had to attend classes.
Mister Miyazaki's class of twenty-one students consists of only about five people that Yugi really cared about: Joey, Tristan, Téa, Rebecca Hawkins, and Ryou Bakura. Everyone else was dead weight.
Aw - Yugi frowned to himself -I made myself sad again.
"Hey, Yug'." Joey approached his desk quietly, his hands in his pockets like always. Of course, he had the regular bed-head look; his honey brown eyes glimmered, though there was no luster. "I, uh..heard about Grandpa. I'm so sorry, man."
Yugi could sense the dam behind in his eyes filling up. But crying in high school is about as fatal as blasting Ylvis on the streets of a college campus.
