The night rolled slowly before the Sun decided to peek its rays. Yugi's darkened pupils fluttered open and shrunk painfully, wincing at the light.
"Jii-chan..." He muttered.
What that stranger said still hadn't slipped his mind. Concern filled his mind as he rolled out of bed and headed directly for his grandfather's room. A moment passed before the elder approached the door.
"Yugi-? Are you alright?" Solomon asked quietly, opening the door.
"Yeah," Yugi exhaled,"just wanted to check on you."
"That's thoughtful my boy, but I'm quite alright." The old man smiled.
Yugi blushed faintly and wiggled his toes,"Well..I guess I'll go. Got school today so.." The purpose seemed silly now.
"School?" Solomon raised a grey eyebrow and glanced behind him and to the alarm,"Yugi; it's eleven thirty-two."
The boy froze.
"I'm sure your mother can just call you in sick."
"No way she'll pass me off that easily!" Yugi shifted his weight, thinking hard about what to do. "Could you try to convince her?"
Solomon chuckled, wrapping an arm around his grandson,"I'll try. I mean; how can resist this face?" And then he proceeded to give the "puppy-eyes".
Yugi laughed genuinely - when was the last time he had done that? - and snaked his small arms around his grandfather, giving the old man a great hug. "I love you Jii-chan."
"I love you as well, my boy. Now.." he pulled Yugi away and set two hands on his shoulders,"don't you have that job to get to-?"
The boy froze. Again. Wow, today was not Yugi's day.
Rushing into his personal bathroom, the boy proceeded to strip of his pajamas and turn on the shower, jumping in ( disregarding the cold). After a good fifteen minutes, he hopped out and yanked a towel off the rack, wrapping it around him while putting toothpaste on his Kuriboh toothbrush. He then jammed it into his mouth and rushed back into his room, frantically searching for something stylish to wear. Seriously; when is the last time that you've seen a boy that works at Old Navy not wear trending clothes?
Yugi didn't hate it. It was better than wearing his mundane and lame school uniform.
Finally; he settled on a pair of black leather pants with a black and white Tommy Hilfiger button-up plaid shirt. He slipped on a pair of red and white Jordan's, a silver Michael Kors watch and a black earring. Getting clothes on your birthday is awesome.
"Yugi!" He heard Gabrielle call from downstairs," I'm called you in sick!"
'Thank you Jii-chan!' The teen grinned and telepathically high-fived his grandfather.
"Arigato Ma!"
"But you need to hightail your way to that job! Jacob isn't the only one who should work hard!"
"Very funny Ma!" Yugi snorted and grabbed his keys and Ray-Banz shades, rushing out of his room and down the stairs.
"Well well," Jacob started with a cup of decaf coffee in one hand and a chocolate covered donut in the other,"don't you look spruced up! That job must pay a lot for you to at dressup everyday."
"Ha ha, Pops. I forgot how to laugh." Walking over to the toaster, Yugi grabbed the bread and stuck two slices in.
"Yugi; sit down. I'm making breakfast. Gaby said as she swiftly moved from pan to pot, flipping pancakes and stirring grits and sautéing eggs. Yugi sighed and took a seat in front of his day.
"Fine, but just for a second. I gotta get going."
"Yeah; you wouldn't want to waste your mother's cooking Yugi." Solomon sauntered by and took the took pieces of toast, popping them in his mouth like it was nothing, chewing and then swallowing. Yugi frowned. Those were his.
"You owe me two slices of bread, Gramps." Yugi muttered.
"Actually, he owes us two slices of bread." Jacob sipped his beverage and smirked,"when's the last time you've been at that job?"
Huh. Yugi couldn't recall.
"I've been busy with school Pops. I really can't go to work everyday."
"Then why are you going today instead of...playing video games or something?"
Another great question. Yugi's dad was a real Sherlock.
To be honest, Yugi would rather be upstairs in his room, kicking ass on some Skyrim and owning Pokémon X, all while pigging out on some pancakes and bacon. That would be what everyone expects a teen boy to do. However - being the semi-good noodle that Yugi was - he needed to get back to reality. And reality was that his family needed the cash for his grandfather's future surgeries. And Gabrielle still spends money on medications for Yugi's anxiety attacks. Yugi didn't even know they made meds for that. Thank Ra that she didn't force him to take them everyday; it was only when the signs of an anxiety attack.Nevertheless; he digressed.
"Because we need the cash. How's the minimum wage fairing you?" Solomon asked his son-in-law.
The teen stifled a laugh. Grandpa is so cool.
"Dad," Gaby frowned at her father, carrying over four plates of pancakes, sausage, bacon, and eggs with grits. She sat them on the table in front of Yugi and Jacob,"not funny."
"Apparently it is if I'm laughin'!" Solomon retorted with a snicker.
A small giggle escaped the adolescent, which was quickly acknowledged and taken care of. Yugi whined and whimpered as Gabrielle pinched his ear and pulled slightly.
"It's not funny Yugi."
"M-Ma! I'm sorry; let go!"
It was Jacob's turn to laugh now. His tired eyes lit up as he watched his wife and son bicker.
A certain someone else didn't think it was so funny.
"How dare you hurt my Aibou...!" The same stranger in black snarled in the corner of the kitchen, blending into the shadows. He turned to Jacob," and how dare you to laugh!" The mystery man vowed that when Yugi became his, he would never hurt him. He would be pampered like the jewel he was.
"Alright; I'm sorry Pops." Yugi huffed when his ear was released.
"Dad, you too."
"Sorry that I hurt your feelings Jacob."
"Good. Now we can eat breakfast without your mother's anger being our unexpected guest.
Gabrielle's inner demon wasn't the only unexpected guest at the table.
