Before Armin could continue his quest for the Legendary Fountain he remembered his daily duties he had yet to fulfill. He guards and patrols the forest for his first dutie.
Taking the overgrown, “Long way” into the forest, Armin happened upon an ugly, squat little hut. The cries of children could scarcely be heard through the mist. Dark smoke billowed from the crooked chimney. Peeking through a greasy window, a witch could be seen preparing a dinner cauldron with two terrified children sitting at the table.
Armin could have just left it all be. It wasn't any of his business. But he was worried for the children, what if the witch was going to cook them up!?
It wasn't his business but he has to see what the heck was going on!
Armin slams the door open and demands answers as to what was taking place in this little hut.
The witch grabs Armin as he tried shoving her off, but sends him flying across the room into a wood pile.
Shrieking with laughter, she cursed Armin and flew off on her crooked broom. But the curse would only last a couple hours.
“Why did you scare grandma off!? We were about to eat! Weir starving!” the children cried.
Realizing he made a terrible mistake, Armin quickly left the scene.
To finish off his final duties, he practiced Military strategy with Smithmaster Taliensin of crafthole. Once they finished, Armin was challenged to a duel but the same person.
He didn't want to appear weak or cowardly, so he accepted.
A crowd of three of four townsfolk appeared to watch the duel. The two classes swords against each other and the crowd cheers.
In the end however, Armin becomes too exhausted, tired and sore to continue. He falls on his knees while taking heavy breaths and Taliensin points the tip of his blade towards Armin's throat. Armin thus raises his hands in surrender.
Everyone cheers for Taliensin’s victory, but Armin feels completely pathetic. Why was he always so weak? Always so pathetic? Why couldn't he be strong…? Like them….
Visions of the past takes place in Armin's mind. When he was a kid, the other kids in the village would always bully Armin and beat him up. They would spit at him, if he had any of his books with him, they'd stomp it on the ground. Armin really didn't know why they would treat him like this.
Could it be because of the fact that Armin was always right and they were always wrong? They would stoop down on a low level and beat Armin because they couldn't back up on their reasonings.
But no matter the reason for his bullies beating him, Eren and Mikasa, Armin's two best friends would always arrive and save Armin.
“Are you alright Armin?” Eren would always ask as he outstretches a hand out to him.
Seeing how weak he was...seeing how he couldn't chase off his own bullies by himself….seeing how his friends would think he didn't possess the strength of stand back up by himself….it made him feel less than pathetic. Less than a coward. Less than weak. He felt like a burden, always weighing his best friends down because of his weakness. Because of his flaw.
He would always reject Eren’s outstretched hand and force himself to stand up on his own.
“I'm alright…” he would say. But the truth is, he wasn't alright. He wasn't ok. He would lie just so he wouldn't worry or trouble his two dearest friends any longer.
Eren….Mikasa….
Armin snaps out of his visions of the past and forces himself to stand back up on his two feet. He would force a smile at everyone, despite being ok.
He was sore, tired and exhausted. He decided before doing anything more, he would get some sleep.
If the Legendary Fountain truly did exist...could it really make him stronger? Can it help keep him from becoming a weak and pathetic burden on others?
