Peter's POV

It had been about a week since the incident and I was recovering well. I could now walk, although I still limped a bit. May was recovering as well and was planned to leave the hospital soon. I also hadn't seen her since the night I got the backpack. Not only did Pepper and Tony think it probably wasn't a good idea, I definitely didn't think it was.

Today was my 16th birthday. I had gotten into the car with Pepper and Tony, unknowing of where our destination was. They said it was a surprise which made me nervous. Tony had a tendency to go over bored on things, plus he was a billionaire. The two aren't a good combination. I was worried he bought me a damn island or something.

My worries were, however, relieved when we pulled into a parking lot and I saw the sign hanging from a post next to the road. We'd just arrived at a pet shelter.

I felt my mouth fall open in shock. I didn't know what we were getting, but I'd always wanted a pet, something I could take care of and call my own. I was beyond excited as I got out of the car and looked at Pepper and Tony, a surprised expression on my face.

"Surprise!" Pepper squealed, hugging me tightly.

Tony walked around the vehicle so he was now on our side. "We've been planning this for a while. We think having a dog will... help... with everything." Clearly he didn't want to say depression or general mental health issues but clearly that's what he was getting at. Wait, a dog?!

"A... dog?" I said, too surprised by the seemingly sudden and rash decision to be my usual loud-mouthed self.

"Yeah, come on!" Pepper encouraged, putting an arm around me and walking towards the building.

"We're going to let you pick out whichever one you want, bud. We figured you'd prefer a shelter because we know how you care about things, even if they aren't human. Well, you just care about all living things so we thought this was better than buying a dog from another source or something." He rambled, clearly nervous. He was in a vulnerable position because I could hate this gift and it would hurt them both. Obviously I didn't, I was ecstatic, but too surprised to show it.

"Were we right?" Pepper added to his statement. They both eyed me warily, looking for any sign of whether or not I liked it.

"Yes, yes. I- I love it." I reassured in my most animated voice possible. "Thank you guys so much, honestly. I'm- Well, the idea is still processing so that's probably why I'm not exactly showing how happy about this I actually am." If this sentence was taken out of context, most people would think I was being sarcastic because I was speaking in a dumbfounded voice, completely sounding monotone but still in awe. However, I meant the words I spoke.

"Okay, well, let's go inside and see what we have!" Pepper said, still basically bouncing with excitement.

We continued on and through the front doors. Inside was a lobby area with dog themed decor on the left and cat decor on the right. There was also a doorway on each side so I could guess which animals were where. To the back of the elongated room— almost a wide hallway —was another door. Just above it read the word "OFFICE".

"If you want, you could get a cat. Whichever you want, bud. Today's your day." Tony said, smiling uncontrollably.

"No I- I want a dog. I've always wanted one." I said, walking towards the left side of the room.
