I was stood in the middle of the gym, practicing my sets when we were given the news that had crushed our hopes of being led to the nationals. Our coach, Kikyoko Shimizu, had been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness(sorry, kiyoko-san). It had struck all of us like a knife deep inside. We loved Kiyoko very much, as she was a beautiful, charismatic and amazing coach who had led our team to countless tournaments, most resulting with us winning.

I personally was closer to Kiyoko than the others, as she went to Karasuno the same year as I had, but was a third year at the time. We were very close, as I hung out with her as she managed the boys' volleyball team back then. My heart broke as I heard one of my closest friends had been stuck with such an illness.

The cheery mood inside the gym had immediately plummeted to a solemn, grave atmosphere. The girls had stopped their actions and practices and were silent, none of us daring to utter any meaningless words. I had to do something, though. I couldn't just let the team wallow in despair as the captain. "N-now now, guys. What's with the long faces?" One of the more rude, younger girls snapped at me.

"Look, captain. As much as we want to be happy and cheery, we need to face it. We will never be able make it without coach." One of my eyebrows raised at her tone. The room has become tense. No one ever dared to speak to me like that. Hah, a first year, having the nerve to speak to a third year like that? I don't think so. Yeah, I was quiet most of the time, but when the time came, I shone brighter than most on the court.

I sounded obnoxious, but it was the truth. I walked up to her while shaking my head at the ground and chuckling before looking at her. I leaned in towards her menacingly, and towered above her. "What was that?" I said, my tone low and my eyes narrowed. She looked away and apologized quietly. I looked around to the other girls. "Anyone else like to share their negative opinions?"

No one spoke. "I'm only going to say this once. I'm the team captain. Agreed, Kiyoko-san was one of, if not the best coach that has ever taught our team. But if she's ill, there's nothing we can do about it besides carrying on with the things we practiced with her. The only things that will come out of my mouth would be to help us improve. And if no one likes it, there's the door."
