It was evening now, the crescent of the moon hanging low in the violet sky, the winter wonderland charity event well under way in The Mystic Grill as Klaus and I strolled through the town square, illuminated by the yellow glow from the Christmas lights above.

We had been talking, pleasant and non-specific, and yet there was something so entirely uncomfortable that I couldn't quite put my finger on.
"Niklaus, why do you want the cure?" I asked at one point, turning to face him curiously. He seemed to stop, pausing in thought. I could see his jaw tensing slightly, the hard line on his brow, a tell-tale sign of frustration.
"There are very few ways that I could die, Adriana" he said. "The white oak stake, for one. But, the cure... it would take away the one thing that grants me power." He paused, turning to face me. "My immortality."

I sighed then, more heavily then intended, earning a curious look from the hybrid.
"Is being the most powerful creature really so important to you, Niklaus?" He said nothing at that, his gaze shifting as he listened intently. "It sounds like an awfully lonely endeavour, if you ask me."

Klaus looked back at me then, strangely, as if it was something he never considered. As if the concept of being lonely, one that he was all to familiar with, never quite had this resonating lack of appeal as it did now. As if, for the first time in centuries, he desired something beyond the hollow obedience of those that feared him.

"And why is it that you want the cure, may I ask?" he said, his voice sounding slightly strained as he attempted to shift the focus off of himself.
I glanced at him then, sighing defeatedly once more. "I want to be free" I admitted. I couldn't help but scoff slightly as I shook my head. "It sounds so cliché, doesn't it?"

Klaus said nothing at that, a sudden seriousness washing over his face as he listened to my explanation.
"I want to be free from my Father... if I can cure him, kill him, or whatever it takes, I'll be free. He won't be able to use my magic anymore." I paused, glancing up at the hybrid. "He won't be able to harm you, or me, or anyone with it."
"There are worse reasons, I suppose" Klaus admitted. Mortality was a strange concept to him, something he rarely thought about. He had no reason to. "But I think there's more to it than that."

I squinted curiously at Klaus, tilting my head slightly.
"My father took everything from me, Nik" I said, a fact he was all too familiar with. "He robbed me of a childhood, of my powers... of any remote chance of happiness. And just when I dared to hope for normalcy, it was ripped from me again."

Klaus nodded, understandingly, not quite knowing what to say for a moment. He held out his arms, both hands holding my shoulders comfortingly as his eyes locked with mine.
"Your father is a fool" he murmured. "And he will pay for it, one way or another."
"I'll make sure of it, believe me" I added, tensing up slightly.
"Freedom, vengeance..." Klaus listed. "Honourable motivations, I'll admit. But I still believe there's something else at play here."
I said nothing at that, raising my brows expectantly.
"Come on, Adriana. I know you." Klaus smirked, arms dropping to his sides once more as I turned away slightly. "As much as you try to deny it, there is some small part of you that hungers to have that power again."

I paused, turning back to face him, my eyes not quite meeting his. He stepped closer to me, pulling us together effortlessly, hands gripping my waist convincingly. "You want to feel it again, don't you? Feel the euphoria coursing through you, magic thrumming at your fingertips..." One of his hands detached from my waist, trailing from the crease of my elbow to my hands, deft fingers meeting my own. "I know you" he said again, softer this time. Genuine.

I felt my breath hitch in my throat slightly as he wove our fingers together, our bodies pressed up against one another seamlessly. "You and I both share that desire, we always have... the power, the unyielding ability to make others quake at our feet. It's why we work so well together, you know. It's why I've been drawn to you since the day that we met."
