Driving.

It was calming. More so than I thought it would be. It had taken me a few months to learn, but I had finally gotten the hang of it, with Shane pulling a few strings to help me get a hold of some false identification documents.

Now however, I was driving down the back roads, returning to Whitmore College. The professor had made his return in the morning, and had left me his car to drive back up in alone, thankfully.

I liked it that way. The unfamiliar feeling of control and freedom at my fingertips. When I was a child, riding horseback was frightening enough. I was petrified of the creatures, until I learned. And once I did, nothing felt more freeing than the wind in my hair as I rode them. But metal machines were something else entirely.

It was at that moment that my phone rang out, pulling me from my reverie. It was propped up infront of me, attached to the dashboard. I pressed the green button, squinting curiously at the unknown number.

"Hello?" I start hesitantly, eyes remaining on the road.
"Adriana" a familiar voice replied through the loudspeaker. "How's my best friend doing?"
"Oh... Nik" I sigh, almost in relief, a reluctant smile pulling at my lips. "I'm driving, what do you want?"
"Do I need a reason to speak to you nowadays? Perhaps I just missed the sound of your voice."
"Oh, hush" I said. "You're distracting me... I am relatively new to this whole thing, you know."
"Ah, but distracting you is one of life's greatest pleasures, Adriana" He chuckled. "Well, amongst other things, but I digress... I hope you're not skipping town on me already, love?" I could hear the teasing tone in his voice.

"No, not yet" I laughed, shaking my head slightly with a sigh. "I need to ask that Professor Shane a few questions... he knows more than he's telling about Luther. But enough about that... how did you even get my number?"
"I have my ways" he replied simply. "Just thought I'd keep my latest ally updated." He paused then, my gaze shifting momentarily as I pulled up at a red light. "A new hunter's been found, which means that killing vampires and spreading his mark is a priority."
"Understood... I take it Damon succeeded in triggering his potential then?" I mused, fingers tapping thoughtfully on the steering wheel.
"Indeed... the Salvatore's will work tirelessly to save their precious doppelgänger from vampirism. which in a way... makes them rather useful to me."
"Uh oh... was that a plural I heard?" I asked dryly. "Please don't tell me there's another Damon walking around Mystic Falls?"

It was then that the light shifted from amber to green, barely focusing on the laugh emanating from the speaker as I moved forward once more.
"He has a brother, yes" Klaus continued. "But I think you'll rather like Stefan... he is the benevolent brother, after all."
I sighed at that, still grinning. "And when have I ever preferred the benevolent brother?"

Bonnie:

"Bonnie?" Elena smiled, opening the front door of the boarding house with a grin. "You're early for girls night, you know."
"I know, but it's important" she said. "Is Damon here? I need to show him something." She nodded towards the large grimoire she held in her arms, just as he appeared next to Elena.

The doppelgänger smiled at Damon, cheeks flushing slightly, as he nodded at Bonnie in greeting.
"Well if it isn't my favourite witch" he said with a smirk. "What's with the house call? Or did you just miss me?"
"Gross" Bonnie grimaced, before walking into the house, passing the pair as she did so. She placed the grimoire down on the table, delicate fingers flipping through thick, dusty pages. "It's about Adriana."
"Ah..." Damon nodded. "The other mystery, did you find something?"
"Sort of..." Bonnie murmured, still trying to find the right page of the grimoire.
There were scribbles in the margins, barely legible, and several of the pages were dog-eared marking pieces of important information.
