-Prologue-
Hi there! Quick authors note before you begin reading: When All Hope Is Lost is currently being edited and will not contain the best grammar, spelling, and so on. It will be finished shortly, though, and hopefully by then will be the best content it can be. Thanks! Hope you enjoy!
I ran as fast as my legs could go, not looking back to see if he was following me. My pale, half clothed body flung past tall eerie pines, as the moon up above lit my way in that unearthly forest. I was terrified and had no clue on where I was going, but in that moment I didn't care. I just wanted to be free.
My breathing was harsh and rapid as I picked up some more speed and darted around a small lake, which I soon recognized and immediately knew where I was: Lake Emily, the lake my mother and I used to come to when I was little. I knew this place like the back of my hand and immediately then from realizing it, took a deep breath and dived straight into the ice cold lake without hesitation. I knew that swimming straight across was faster than going around from experimental trials I had done when I was younger. Being an only child at the age of seven really made me try strange new things.
Once my body had been fully submerged in the ice cold water, I opened my eyes slightly to see and kicked harder underneath the mucky water to swim faster. Fish flung themselves out of my way as I darted past, algae and seaweed rising up from everywhere. I knew the other side of the lake was where the road was, and I needed to get over there as fast as possible now.
Kicking harder under the water, I pushed aside the weeds growing up from the bottom until finally seeking the other side of the lake. My heart beat faster than I knew was possible out of fear and anxiousness, as I frantically began thinking of my family, friends, even my nice warm bed; something I hadn't seen in two months. I smiled, before pushing my head up from the water and looking back to see him running around the lake to get to me on the other side.
I gasped, my heart stammering louder than before, as I pushed myself out of the lake completely and ran straight into the forest to get to the road. My body moved twice as fast from being rejuvenated in the water and I knew I was going to make it. I wouldn't let him kidnap me again...
"Stop or I'll shoot!" I heard him belch behind, right as I hit the road with a thud and nearly collided with the racing cars on the highway. I knew what he had said was a lie, because they wanted me back as healthy as I could be, not dead or wounded. He also didn't have a gun in the first place, something I had noticed before escaping.
Frantically waving my arms around within the second, motioning for someone to help, I saw a small white car slow down beside me and roll down the window. Without any delay, however, I yanked open the unlocked passengers door and locked it behind me.
"Step on it, hurry!" I screamed, as my eyes were still locked on the forest, which my kidnapper abruptly came to the end of to watch me ride off to safety. His broad shoulders, six foot height, and bearded up face made him look like a monster stomping its way out from the forest.. which was definitely what he was. A monster.
I sighed as I knew I was safe for now, and turned to thank the driver for stopping and letting me in. When my eyes met the young man behind the wheel, however, I knew I was a goner...
