'The donuts aren't here?ˋ
Gale stood, hands plastered to her hips, mouth in a tight thin line. Marcus, Ava, and Jazmin were sitting around a circle table, too weak with shock and horror so stand, as Gale interrogated them about the missing treats.
'The donuts are always here. There is no question.' The woman said, looking at each teenager. Marcus stared blankly at his crossed hands sitting before him on the grey table, face devoid of colour. Ava and Jazmin blinked worriedly at Gale in turn. 'That's what we thought too...' Ava whispered, jumping at a sudden loud noise of a door closing in the auditorium. After Marcus' disturbing discovery, the doors into the river room, usually open to the coffee-wanting visitors, were closed and locked. Every jittery knock from the guests was ignored.
Marcus shook his head. 'The people won't stand for this... they love for those Sunday donuts! We'll be killed. Or worse!' Jazmin rolled her eyes, but under the sarcasm, her thoughts raced in panic. No donuts? This is an unprecedented catastrophe in true life history! Gale crossed her arms over her pink top sporting a fashionable owl and turned again towards the kitchen. 'You promise me you looked in every single drawer and cabinet in the church?'
Jazmin nodded. 'We didn't find the donuts. We found the cinnamon buns in the fridge as always, but no donuts.' Gale bit her lip and twirled a long, dangly earring with her painted fingernail. 'Did you ask Jeremy?' Ava nodded. 'When he banged on the door, we couldn't turn him away so we had to tell him what happened. He said he hadn't seen them, and then he proceeded to go into the men's bathroom and we haven't seen him since.' The woman nodded anxiously. 'Does the pastor know yet?' Ava shook her head quickly. 'No. we hope to find them before service ends.'
*brriiinggg!*
Jazmin picked up her tablet and placed it on the table on it's back. A message flashed across the screen in bright white over the Thor themed wallpaper. Jazmin looked up. 'It's Sophie. They're all here. Parked outside. They say they're all exited for the message today- and she also said they'd kill for donuts right about now.' Marcus pulled out his phone and typed rapidly. Soon another message lit up Jamin and Ava's screens: 'go home! Church is cancelled today! We can watch it online at home!'. The response bubble flickered the three dots for a few moments before sophie's response popped up. 'That's not a good sign... Ava, Jazmin, what's going on?'
Jazmin smacked marcus' shoulder and he winced. 'Ugh. You made her suspicious! She's too smart for that.' The strawberry blonde girl typed quickly and sent a fix: 'we're having some difficulties today. Come on in, but don't come in the kitchen please. Enjoy service! Hopefully we can attend in a few mins!' She stuffed the tablet back into the pocket on her emerald-green jeggings.
