Chapter 9

The next two days with Bobby were extremely fun, Jayde reconnecting with the hunter life and network. Hunters dropped by and said hello, some called for help, others to thank for Bobby's help with a case. Doing research was fun, learning new things about new monsters and very odd creatures was extraordinarily fascinating for Jayde. It was also very fun to have Bobby around, his presence calming the anxiety she had about Sam and Dean, who - according to the previous night's news report - were still awaiting trial in Green River County Detention Centre. She was very anxious at this point, as the boys had only planned to be there for two days tops, now this apparent setback had risen and Jayde could only stand by, helpless. She had even thought about going down to the prison and speaking to one of them, but Bobby pulled her away from the idea, highlighting that she would instantly be linked with the boys and be investigated.

Now, at around 8:30 am, Jayde was at Bobby's desk, overwhelmed in books and yelling into a mobile phone whilst Bobby was running around looking for spell ingredients. At the same time the two were also trying to hold off a demon.

"OK, Rufus, are you holding them off?" Jayde cried into the phone, frantically flipping through the pages of an old book. "Bobby, I know we're under attack but could you maybe hurry up?!"

She dodged under the table as the demon lunged, the body being possessed one of a teenage boy, his varsity jacket torn from various knife lunges. Jayde grabbed the phone as she crawled to the other side of the library, chucking various books at the teen. The voice on the phone was strained too, Rufus on the other end trying to battle another demon and weak witch.

"The witch is being-" A sudden crash cut him off. "Temperamental, but I've managed to block her off for a second." Another crash echoed through the phone at the same time Jayde pulled her knife and swung at her own demon, missing by barely an inch. She realised that Bobby being extremely cautious was a good thing, but when a witch can crack up your floor and ceiling devil's traps, his foresight seemed a bit ruined. The voice over the phone spoke up again, a tiny bit more panicked now.

"The demon on the other hand is giving me a harder time." There was more crashing and a sizzling sound, like cold water hitting a white-hot piece of metal. "YEAH, EAT HOLY WATER YOU SON OF A BITCH!"

"Bobby?" Jayde cried out when she barely inched the demon's swing at her; why he just now pulled out a dagger was anyone's guess.

"Gimmie one second kid!" Bobby's voice echoed through the house, the sound of his gravelly tone relaying something in latin drawing the demon's attention for a moment. Taking this opportunity, Jayde swung hard at the teen, who - sadly - was her age and kinda cute. Netherless, her swing had just nicked him, his attention back on her and furiously trying to shish-kebab her.

"How's your end going?" Rufus called into his line, breathing hard and giving Jayde the impression he was running for his life.

"Bobby's almost done, once the connection between the witch and demon is broken they'll be a lot weaker and easier to deal with." Jayde backed out of the library and into the hallway, trying to draw the demon away from the kitchen where Bobby was performing a complicated unbinding spell. She managed to kick the kids' legs out from under him just as he stabbed the wooden staircase railing, narrowly missing Jayde's head. In any other circumstance she would be shouting the few words of latin that sent the thing back to hell, but as long as the witch was linked with them, the two demons were practically locked inside their bodies. Jayde's demon punched her in the jaw when she tried to avoid his knife, the impact making her stagger for a moment before ducking to avoid another.

"Still holding up Rufus?" Jayde yelled, her mangled struggle to dodge the demon's onslaught of attacks mingling with her voice. She had jumped when he tried to slash her ankles, now standing on his hands and trying to keep him at bay on the ground. When he kicked her in the stomach she faltered, trying to regain the breath that had been knocked out of her. He pushed her against the wood as the phone dropped out of her hands, Bobby's voice becoming stressed as he noticed Jayde's predicament but continuing with the spell. Just as she felt a cold knife press against her throat Jayde kneed him in the stomach, taking the second where the demon faltered to grab him by the neck and flipping him over, leaving him in a lying heap on the floor. Just to make sure he was subdued, Jayde kicked him in the head a few times until he was definitely unconscious, picking up the phone and wiping some blood from her lip.
