"(Y/L/N)? (Y/L/N), are you awake yet?" A familiar voice called out to you. You opened one eye and yawned. Last night you had slept well beside Tigerstar and were ready to return to camp with him this morning — but something didn't feel nor sound right.
As your vision began to return, you opened your other eye to see that you were in a familiar den. Startled, you immediately sat upright and looked around. Beside you was none other than Firestar.
"What? Firestar?" You remarked. "How did you-"
"Oh, thank StarClan," Firestar sighed, relieved as he pressed his head against your chest, bringing it over your shoulder. "You're alright, (Y/L/N). We brought you back to ThunderClan overnight. Did Tigerstar hurt you?"
"What?" You gasped. "No, why would he have?"
"When you and Tawnypaw suddenly disappeared from camp, the clan went frantic," Firestar began. "Goldenflower was searching all around for Tawnypaw with Bramblepaw and Graystripe, and Cinderpelt and I were looking for you outside of camp. But we couldn't find either of you. Are you sure you're alright? Graystripe went to see his kits with an old friend and I saw Blackfoot murder Stonefur. Did he do anything to you?"
"No, no, of course not! I'm fine."
"Good. What happened to Tawnypaw?"
"Er, well-"
"Tawnypaw! Oh, Tawnypaw! You're back!" At that moment, the pale ginger queen, Goldenflower, burst through the entrance. Her green eyes were sparking with relief until she met yours. She froze, her ears flattening as she stepped back. Goldenflower stared at you, horrified, then pelted up to you. She put her face up to yours.
"What did they do to my daughter?" She demanded. "Tell me! You must have been part of it! Why, if you even laid a hair on her, prepare to be crow-food!"
"Goldenflower, stop!" Firestar ordered, tearing Goldenflower away from you. Goldenflower hissed furiously and whipped her head around to face Firestar.
"This piece of fox-dung might have been in on this," she snarled, turning to glare at you again, "what happened to Tawnypaw?"
"She left willingly!" You blurted. "I swear! Tigerstar didn't hurt her and nor did Blackfoot, or any other TigerClan cat! And why would I hurt her?"
"You must think I have a brain the size of an acorn to fall for that!" Goldenflower spat.
"Wait, Goldenflower," Firestar mewed, "(Y/L/N) doesn't lie."
"How can we trust a cat like her, let alone a former loner?" Goldenflower retorted.
"She's told the truth before," a voice calmly answered from behind Goldenflower. You looked past the queen's shoulder and saw Cinderpelt standing by the den entrance. "How about you take some time to calm down and rest, and let Firestar and I talk to (Y/L/N)?"
"Fine," Goldenflower growled, "but if I find out that she's hurt my poor Tawnypaw, I'll rip her throat out before she can even begin to utter an apology."
Goldenflower flicked her tail at your face before storming out of the den. Cinderpelt watched her leave and sat beside you.
"So, tell me what really happened, (Y/L/N)," she mewed, "be honest."
You explained what had happened while you and Tawnypaw were in TigerClan. You noticed that a mixture of gasps, whimpers and threatening, almost jealous growls were coming from Firestar. Cinderpelt remained in a stable and intent gesture. Once you had finished, Cinderpelt nodded.
"Thank you, (Y/L/N)," she mewed, "we'll keep that information in mind to plan when TigerClan may attack us and what they're doing."
Cinderpelt stood and padded out of the den. Firestar gazed at you.
"(Y/L/N)?" He asked.
You looked up at him. "Er, yes, Firestar?"
"Do you have time to come hunting with me? We haven't had a big talk between the two of us in a while."
"Oh, erm, sure," you smiled. Firestar smiled back at you and stood, flanking you out of the den. You crossed the camp clearing and squeezed through the camp entrance. The both of you headed for Sunningrocks.═ ∘♡༉∘ ═
Once you arrived, Firestar leaped up onto the rock that gave Sunningrocks its name. The sun glistening on the sparkling surface blanketed Firestar's back, turning his pelt to gold. You stared at it in awe.
"Come join me, (Y/L/N)," Firestar mewed. You nodded and bounded up the rocks, lying down beside Firestar. You felt the hot warmth of the sun cleansing your fur mixed with the smooth granite rock floor beneath you. There was silence for a long moment.
"(Y/L/N)," Firestar began. You gazed across at him. "What do you think about us?"
"Us?" You asked.
"To make you comfortable, let's say 'friendship'. How would you describe it? I know it's only been a few nights."
"Oh, our friendship. Very well, Firestar. I've got your back and you've got mine. You're respectful, trustworthy, kind and friendly. You and Cinderpelt were the first to properly welcome me into the clan."
Firestar smiled and nodded. "I would say the same about you, (Y/L/N). But I can't."
Your heart began to sink. "What do you mean? Firestar, I'm sorry for running away with Tawnypaw. She was my friend, too."
"No, no, (Y/L/N). What I mean is that I would say you own all of those traits, too. But that's not what comes to my mind when I think about you. (Y/L/N), you are kind, talented, smart and a good, new friend of mine. Actually, you probably wouldn't remember me, but we've known each other for quite some time now."
"We have?"
"Yeah," Firestar turned his neck to reveal a long but light scar running down from his cheek to his shoulder. You gasped - surely you couldn't have done that?
"What's this?" You remarked. Firestar turned back to look at you.
"You really loved that little twig ball of yours when you were younger. It was twig, wasn't it?"
"Wait, yeah!" Memories flooded back to you from when you were younger. It was so clear now. Ever since you were a kit, your best companion was a small heap of twigs that had been molded into a ball - Ginger found it and gave it to you.
Then, thinking back considerably long ago, memories came flooded back of a certain ginger tom you had once encountered.═ ∘♡༉∘ ═
Batting the head of your brother with your paw, you stepped back with the ball of twigs tightly locked in your jaw.
"Back off, already!" You hissed. "This is mine! Go find Moss, or something else to amuse you."
"But I found it first!" Ginger grunted.
"And you gave it to me," you poked your tongue out playfully, "so it's mine. Plus, I licked it."
"Ew!" Ginger shrieked. "That's not a thing, stop licking all my stuff!"
You smirked and bounded away into the undergrowth, to your favourite little hollow beside a twolegplace fence. You were surprised they hadn't caught wind of what a mess you made right outside their garden every time you went to visit.
Tossing the ball of twigs in your small paws carelessly, you jolted suddenly at the sound of a small branch snapping nearby. You whipped your head around wildly, looking for the source of the sound.
Ginger, you never give up, you groaned under your breath. And as if the presence heard you, you suddenly saw a ginger head poke into the entrance of your hollow.
"Go away already!" You scowled, propelling yourself at the ginger tom. The cat stepped back in fear but he was too slow to avoid you as you pounded into his shoulder and dash your glinting claw down his side.
"Ow! What is your problem?" The cat cried.
"Oh, don't even try! Wait, Ginger?" You suddenly took a step back and observed the tom. It finally hit you that it wasn't your brother, and your mouth gaped. "Oh, I'm so sorry!"
"Haha, it's fine," the short ginger slowly stood and studied the scratch he had received. He quickly ran his tongue over it a few times and looked back at you, "just please be more careful."
"I know, I should be. I will be," you replied, gesturing the ball in your paw. "I thought you were trying to take this."
"That? Please. Back in my den we have so many cool, real toys."
"Oh! You must be the cat who lives with these twolegs! My name's (Y/L/N). Who are you?"
"Rusty."
"Heh, well, Rusty," you grinned, flicking the twig ball towards him, "something tells me we're going to get along quite well.═ ∘♡༉∘ ═
"Rusty?" You were amazed. Ever since that day, you had both visited each other every afternoon to play together, until one day, he just vanished. But now, you were staring straight at that same cat. He might have been the only cat you kept a clear memory of from your childhood - you knew everything about each other and you hadn't even realized it.
"That's me," Firestar mewled. "You were my kithood. I can't put into words how much you mean to me. Leaving my twoleg den and going into the forest wasn't that hard, the only painful thing was having to leave you. And now, I have something to tell you that I've been meaning to mention ever since I first locked eyes with you."
You stared at Firestar for another moment, stunned. Your heart was beginning to pound out of your chest and your cheeks were steaming."(Y/L/N)," Firestar mewed, shuffling closer to you. "I'm in love with you.""You are?" You stuttered, frozen. "Really? Firestar, I don't know what to say..."
"Firestar! You piece of fox-dung!" A voice caterwauled from behind. You looked back as a brown blur shot past Firestar before the ginger tom was gone. You leaped to your paws and looked down to see a mass of dark brown and ginger fur spinning and writhing on the forest floor.
It was Tigerstar and Firestar, battling each other in blind fury.═ ∘♡༉∘ ═
