As he stood outside of the door to the place he used to live in, the memories came rushing back to him.
He had fought with his now ex-family, yelling and screaming back at them when they had scorned him. He remembered the pain and fire that ran in his body when Robin had slashed his back open when he was ten years old, resulting in the long scar that remained on his back even now, as well as the thicker scar on his waist from Zero cutting him with his training blades as a punishment. He remembered the video that Robin, his older brother, had sent to him after he left for Beacon of his ex-father burning his name and photo off the giant family tree that stretched across the walls of the Citrine home, erasing Varis from the family history.
Varis was dressed in a rather odd way for a Citrine; a teal knee-length trench coat on top of a tucked black dress shirt with a gold tie, ripped blue jeans, and black stability shoes, and his silver bandana around his ankle, with his hair brushed back so that his bangs were not in his eyes. On his left shoulder, a treble clef emblem was visible in a bright gold; he made sure it would be visible to see to his ex-brothers and ex-parents. And strapped to his back was Sosei Treble, his weapon that could morph into a bow, a sniper rifle, and a bat, in its dormant form, along with a quiver full of different kinds of arrows.
That was not what he was here for.
Varis was here for Lapis Lazuli, who was being held captive in the cellar by Robin and Robin's twin, Zero. He was evidently being abused by his brothers. The last time he saw Lapis in the video, Robin had taken Lapis by the hair and smashed his head into a pole, inevitably knocking him unconscious with brute force. Robin knew how to lure Varis back home good and well, much to Varis' chagrin.
He rung the doorbell, which sounded chimes and bells all within the house. A split second later, a maid had opened the door, which Varis had recognized as Ebony Scarlight, whose family had served the Citrine Family for generations.
"Mister Variscite?" She questioned. "Is that really you, Mister Variscite?"
"How nice to see you again, Miss Scarlight," Varis said, bowing down a little. "I hope they are treating you well."
"Ah, yes, they're treating me quite well," She said, holding the door open. "Come in, Mister Variscite."
Varis took a step inside the house, the familiarity of the building almost seeming foreign to him now.
"Please, call me Varis. Variscite is...quite a mouthful." Varis said, looking around. He had to find Lapis, but barging in without notice would bring up unneeded bloodshed. He wanted to fight as little as possible with any of his ex-brothers.
"Is there something you needed, Mister Varis?" Ebony Scarlight asked, standing to the side. "Your parents are-"
"They are not my parents anymore." Varis didn't mean to sound so cold, but the bitterness was the only thing he acknowledged he had in common with the head of the Citrine Family. "I am only here because they have someone I know in captivity. The only person in this household that I acknowledge any connection to by blood is Fern."
Ebony sighed in discontent.
"Very well then. I shall take you to Master Citrine. But I do heed to be careful, he had been quite...agitated these days."
"I wonder why," Varis muttered as he raked his hand through his hair, a habit he had gotten from Lapis for whenever he was impatient or anxious.
Ebony lead Varis through the halls of the mansion towards Cobalt Citrine, his ex-father's office.
Inevitably, they passed by the family tree. The burn mark on the wall made it easy to see where Varis used to be on the Tree of History.
"Master Citrine was...most upset with your departure all those years ago."
