His voice cracked, as if he was forced to swallow acid.
"Do you now recognize your place, Spirit Priest?" The girl said loftily, dragging her small knife along his jawline in a taunting tone. "Defy me, and you defy my father, the ruler of this land."
Finn only gritted his teeth as she pressed her knife even deeper, about to draw blood.
"I would rather die than marry you," he spat.
Her harsh grin only widened.
"And that can be arranged."
Amaryllis slashed her knife. Blood blossomed and fell onto the ground as it dripped from his wound. However, it wasn't enough to kill him, only enough to leave a scar on his jawline.
"Finn-nii!" His sister, Liya, called out in anguish. "FINN-NII!"
Finn only waved his hand to keep Liya at bay.
"You can tell your father that I would even betray the spirits themselves in order to avoid having to marry you," he said, venom lacing every word. "I will slit my own stomach to avoid marriage with your travesty of a family!"
"Let's see if you really have the GUTS to do something like that."
Amaryllis sheathed her knife and, with a click of her heels, had her soldiers escort her away.
"Finn-nii, Finn-nii!" Liya had rushed to his side as Finn stumbled. "Oh, stay with me, I'll patch up your wound."
She sat him down on a nearby chair as she rushed to get a medical kit. Soon enough, she was pressing a cloth to his face to stem the blood that was coming off his face. When some of the blood was left, she covered the wounds with medicated bandages.
"That damn brat," Finn cursed under his breath. "I would never marry someone like that. I would rather kill myself then have to marry her."
"Finn, you shouldn't say things like that," Liya whispered urgently. "You can get publicly executed for things like that."
"I don't care, I don't care," Finn had began to ramble. "An insufferable, horrible, destructive, self-entitled-!"
"Finn." Liya's voice was full of warning.
He took a huff of annoyance, wincing as she pressed the bandages closed.
"Finn, maybe it's time to leave," Liya whispered. "Maybe Kenzai has caught on to what we were doing, which is why he's trying to force your hand. The Battlefront on Orion, we can't possible keep doing this right under his nose, he's going to find out."
Time to leave...? Finn had only dreamt about leaving their country forever. But he knew that no matter where he went, no matter where he tried to go, he would be chased down and dragged back.
And what about Liya? She was just as big a target as he was. The moment they tried to leave, it was off with her head, just like his.
"How are we supposed to do that?" Finn asked bitterly. "He'll kill both of us the moment we try to."
"I know, but we have to try," Liya said quietly, putting away the remaining medical supplies. "We...we can't keep doing this. We have to leave. Chisao and Jynx will understand, they can take us in."
"I know."
"..."
Silence ensued, leaving it to deafen both of them. They had to escape.
But it was only a matter of time before they were able to do so.
