"C'mon  Varian, would you just take the book?" Eugene frowned. He was trying to give Varian a copy of The Tales of Flynnigan Rider, which he was refusing to accept. Eugene didn't understand- these books made Varian so happy. But he didn't want to be happy. He thought it was wrong to be happy at a time like this.

"Ok," he sighed, "I'll leave this here"

He slid the book under the iron bars and left. Varian didn't even get up to take it. The book reminded him of when his dad would read it to him.

"Ok, Varian, it's time for bed"

"One more chapter! One more!"

"We'll finish it tomorrow"

"Promise?"

"Promise"

Promise.

Varian sighed at picked up a small pebble. He rubbed the smooth stone repeatedly, finding it quite calming. Eyes closed, he tried to think of nothing. Just empty, blank space. But this blank space reminded him of a sheet of paper that he'd write experiment results on. And his experiments led to his dad, trapped, frozen in an amber prison. He shuddered at thought. There's no way out of this.

"Y'know, I think the king's going easy on him" the Captain remarked as he sharped in dagger.

"I dunno. I mean, he's just a child" Pete sputtered.

"Did I ask for your opinion?"

"S-sorry sir"

"The boy needs to be taught a lesson, and I think I know just what to do"

"And what's that?"

The Captain smirked.
