The sword plunged into the amber with one shift motion. The golden shards flew everywhere, splitting into pieces the second they came in contact with the blade. Varian covered his eyes with his arm as a few small pieces hit him, causing small scrapes. Queen Arianna had turned her back, as well as the Captain, in the same defensive fashion that Varian had. Adira, however, was seemingly unfazed.

It took three blows to completely shatter the substance, which had been proved unbreakable until now, and with the third came a loud thump. Quirin's body fell to the ground. He was finally free.

"D-dad?" Varian lowered his arm to see his father.

No response.

Varian repeated himself, kneeling next to his father.

Silence.

"Rin? It's Adira" the woman squatted down next to Varian.

Nothing.

It was in that moment that the young alchemist had a startling realization. One that would forever change his life. But this was not something he would believe for himself.

"Dad, wake up!" he shouted, shaking the man as tears filled his eyes. Arianna's heart shattered at the sight, and a frown grew visible on Adira's face.

"Varian, I'm so sor-"

Then came a cough. A slight movement in his arm, which grew bigger, eventually pushing Quirin up into a kneel position.

"Varian?"

"Dad?"

"Varian!"

Varian had gotten the hug he so desperately needed. The hug that would make everything ok. At least for the moment, that is.
