A few days later.
It was about noon when clara called me.
"Hello?" I answered.
"Hey ava." Clara responded.
"Oh, hey! How are you?"
"I'm uh, fine. Listen, I'm almost to the ship so meet me at the dorm ok?" She said nervously.
"Yeah ok, are you alright clara?" The line was silent. "Clara?" I asked.
"Yeah I'm... just meet me at the dorm." Then she hung up. I thought it was a little strange how she hung up on me like that, and also she sounded super nervous. But I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt and let her explain stuff to me. I did as she said, and stayed at the dorm to patiently wait for her. About an hour later, there was a knock. But before I could open it, clara opened the door. She stared at me wide eyed, but I just smiled. She ran to me and hugged me. I hesitantly hugged her back.
"Whoa, are you ok? I mean, I love hugs and all but-" She let go, and that's when I saw the book she was holding. A big book at that. I looked at it. "What's that?" I asked. She bit her bottom lip as she went to sit on one of the beds. She patted a spot next to her, so I went and sat down. She flipped the book on her lap so the title was facing towards the ceiling. The title read; MAGIC SPELLS AND CURSES. I squinted my eyes at it. This book was bound to be at least a hundred years old, maybe even more. "What is that?" I asked pointing to it. She sighed.
"I found it in the local library by my parents house. It was in the back with all the other relics and..." She opened it to the third page, the index. She pointed at words that sat next to the number 40. "Look." She said.BLACK DEATH
My eyes widened.
"What? Phil said the only information on that is with him, and he won't let me near it." She looked at me intently.
"Ava?" She whispered.
"Yeah?" I whispered back to her.
"Can you block rose out?" She asked. I nodded. Blocking rose out was pretty easy. All I needed to do was make sure that she wouldn't be able to hear or see the things I was doing on the outside. I shut my eyes tight and opened them back up. I gave her a successful smile, but she didn't smile back at me. I frowned as she turned back to the book. She flipped to page 40, and once she got there, the only thing I saw was 6 paragraphs and two pictures. The one phil had shown me the first day, and then another one... one that was an actual picture. A picture of rose that had a year under it. "1819..." I mumbled quietly. Clara nodded.
"Look, this paragraph. It says that there have only been two recorded sights of this creature. One in the b.c era, and another during the pioneers." She said. I kept staring at the paragraph, re reading it over and over again. "It says that someone found a women changing into black death, but she was accused of magic and being a witch, so she was burned at the stake. But look, it says here, that the black death needs to generate enough power so that it can contain a host. Otherwise, the host and it would die." I didn't do anything. My eyes were fixed on the book. "It says that if a black death is changed into enough times, it can control the host." I suddenly looked to her, making her jump.
"What do you mean?" I asked nervously.
"It means that if you change into rose enough, than she can turn into herself, without you having to say the trigger words. She would have full control over both of you." My heart was racing. Rose isn't a bad guy. She would never do that to me. Right? I shook my head, making those terrible thoughts leave my mind.
"But why would she do that?" I asked fearfully. Clara shook her head and shrugged.
"Oh but one more thing," Clara said pointing at the book. "It says that the black death only has three tries, according to the lore, to contain and control a host."
"Three tries? What does that mean?!" I sighed and anxiously rubbed my hands together. "How many times have I turned into rose?" I asked.
"Maybe over 50? I don't really know." Clara was starting to get as scared as me.
"Ok I'm uh, I'm gonna go talk to rose. You talk to phil okay?" I said pointing at her. She nodded as I hopped off the bed and hurriedly got to the viewer. I didn't have to talk to rose for a few more hours, but I had to ask her about this. What does it all mean? I asked myself. I bursted through the doors and saw a maintenance man fixing something. "Excuse me?" I called. My voice caused him to look up towards me. "Can I please use this?" I said pointing at the viewer. He recognized who I was and decided to let me. He went into the back control room and opened the door. I went inside and stayed still. The loud noise, the light, the whirring, and there she was. I made sure to unblock her before I talked to her, so she wouldn't be silent the entire time. She appeared on the screen in front of me, and smiled.
