SATURDAY - SUPER DATEImmediately Anna had set eyes on her sister, she dragged her into the latter's room and began telling her about Henry and the Chess game of course through writing. Kemi had made a very loud squeal that got the attention of both their parents. After much contemplation, Anna decided to leave the house using Oma's name as an excuse even though she didn't want to.
So she stood outside the lesson like a lost person, wondering maybe she heard his instructions right. Did he tell her to wait outside or inside? He did say he was going to get there first. Then she began to think the worst. Was it all a kind of sick joke? She should have seen it coming. A boy like him would never like a girl like her. But he kissed her cheek. It probably meant nothing. As she fidgeted with her thoughts she did not notice the familiar boy walking up to her so when he took her by her shoulder to get her attention, she jumped away very startled.
"Relax it's just me." He proclaimed immediately he saw the fear her eyes held.
"Sorry I kept you waiting, something held me back." He apologised once he saw she was calm. She nodded her head and passed him a weak smile.
"I decided that we would just go somewhere near and familiar to keep you at ease." She was happy that he hadn't ditched her and that he had her in mind.
"We are going to Teddy's" Anna nodded her head and began walking with him. Teddy was a medium sized cafe with a small book shelf for rental services and purchasing. She had only been there a few times when she had to hang out with her friends. She loved their snacks and their beverages they were almost as good as her Aunt Nunu's own. As they walked in a slightly awkward silence, she began to decide on what she was going to order when she got there and she calculated if she had enough money to order and to use as transport. In a hurry to be in time, she had just grabbed a random amount of money from her purse. She felt the pocket of her jean pinafore to make sure her money was still there. Her sister had as usual wanted her to over dress but she was not having any of that. They were just going out for a drink and nothing more. They finally got to Teddy's and they sat at a table and Anna only realised then that Henry had a book and a pen. Quite thoughtful she thought. He pushed them to her.
"Make your order." He said with a bright smile and she wrote down what she wanted before reaching for her pocket and pulling out a 1000 Naira note, placing it on the book and sliding it to Henry.
He picked up the money, after staring at her order and then tried to return the money to her. She watched him confused, not understanding what he was up to.
"Take your money back Anna." He said sternly.
"I asked you out on this date, so it's on me. Everything we take in is on me." He gently shoved her money into her hand before getting up to make his order. In all he said, only one word got stuck in Anna's head. 'Date.' He confirmed their outing to be a date. They were on a date and although she tried, Anna could not stop the party going on in her head and tummy at the thought of her first date. She tried to wipe her smile away so he wouldn't see it on his return and be weirded out but it was too late.
"What did I miss he asked." With her eyes wide, she shook her head. He looked at her skeptically before shrugging it off.
"Our food would be here very soon." He announced. "In the mean time, how about we get to know ourselves?"------
"Gracias" Henry nodded to the waiter that had served them their food. He was about to dig in when he found out that his companion had remained still. He looked up to see her already staring at him, her mouth left open.
"Anna." He called out to her getting her attention. She began to scribble on the notebook he gave to her."You speak Spanish?"
She had to be surprised, it was difficult to find someone who knew how to speak a foreign knowledge.
He shook his head. "No I don't, I just pick up some words from the Spanish telenovelas my sister watches all the time." He clarified leaving Anna's mouth in a 'O' shape.
He had a sister? What was she like? Anna wondered. Would she like the mute girl? Was she friendly? Why was she even thinking these things? It was not like there was anything between her and the boy beside her. They were just friends and the 'date' they were on was pretty much a one time thing.
