The Lucky Ones [ II ]

The officers spotted her approaching town with her head hung low the whole way. When she was close enough, they blocked her path. She finally looked up. "Marcus?"

He gave a grim smile, "we'd like to ask you to come with us."

Noah, her 'father', was at the station. "I told them you can't possibly do such a thing, Wyv." He assured her in his tight squeeze as she held back her tears that came from the heavy weight in her chest. "You would never. Marcus, Jayne, Officers, she's like my own child."

"We know that Noah, we found no trace of the poison in the store, but we still have to ask her some questions cause she's the one who made the drink. And as we know from the wife, she and the family is a bit acquainted with her. She's aware how often the Sato family comes and their routine whenever they're here. She's... she knows."

These police knew that much, huh... that's why the wife didn't smile at her for the first time when she went through the doors of the station, sobbing alone in the other office. Where's Mr. Sato now?

In a small room, a pair officers asked her questions, questions assuming she was the murderer; questions assuming someone else was the murderer and she didn't see him— or her—  slip the poison in the drink.

"Did you see anyone suspicious? Anyone on standby by the bar while you serve the drinks."

She shook her head. "Everyone lingers by the shack."

"Remember, Wyvern!"

"I can't! You know how many faces I look at everyday, Todd. They all look like tourists to me, weird or not." She knew she sounded irrational at this moment. Childish. Yet...

Wyv was about to leave the station, ignoring the large presence of Mrs. Sato in the other room— when she was called. The short Japanese woman neared and gazed deep in her eyes. What was she seeing? Did she really think Wyvern could kill anyone? Specifically her husband? Wyvern, as someone who destroyed the happy family as the Satos always were?

She hoped not, cause she thought she was gonna get slapped. Her face was ready for it, waiting for the pain, though she's never experienced being hit in the face before. But, what Mrs. Sato did was slip both her hands around Wyvern in an embrace and pressed her face in her neck, letting her tears gush again. It wasn't about whether it was her or not. She just needed someone.

-------

A pair of tall, brawny men in standard Hawaiian button-up shirts and khaki shorts sat alert by the beach chairs in the blue hues of dusk. So close to the very shack accused of murder only hours ago. They were one of the few brave people who still came to the beach despite the recent news and the notable yellow crime scene tapes tied around the scene.

Wyv hopped over the counter then stared at the thrashed store. "Where the hell is Kai and Raf. They didn't even come back and check this place. Didn't even pull the steel shutter shut."

With their large backpacks, the men approached and settled on the bar, "can we have that?" The larger man pointed at the poster. She gestured at the shambled place then turned her back to them. Maybe they didn't hear about the news.

They shrugged at each other. She started cleaning up. She picked up the apples, mangoes, oranges— "Did a British man come here today?"

That's two people in this whole world who knows exactly who they should be looking for. She didn't answer; simply continued sorting things, relieving herself after each clean-up.

"We need your answers. It's for the investigation."

If you say so

"Oh," she stopped in her spot, grabbing the attention of the two expectant men. "Boss was here." She picked up the note by the sink.

"Lady—"

"If you're asking if there was anyone suspicious here today, there was, but he wasn't British. He was American. Just like me. Not like the two of you, wherever you two came from."

"Anything else you want to add?"

"He was gone when I turned to the wife of Mr. Sato screaming."
