All of a sudden I felt a sharp pang in my heart. I fell to my knees in shock. "Kili!" I shouted in disbelief, then quickly regained my senses and stumbled back up to stand, scrambling to find the right book in that cursedly vast library. Where is it, where is it?! I fretted, moving aside novels, some falling to the floor as I raced to find that one book, the one that could save him. I glanced up and around, tears pricking the edges of my vision as the hope in my heart faded, but then- there, on the tip-top shelf! There it was! I wasted no time in pushing the sliding wood ladder to align with that shelf and hurriedly climbed it, slipping one tense moment and almost falling, but I quickly regained my footing and snatched that blessed book from it's seat.

Practically tripping my way back down the ladder, I leaped off the last few rungs and stumbled to my knees once more as I landed, the book dropping to the ground before me and it spread open to a page on a spell. An enchantment, to, as my luck would have it, to keep a person the caster loved safe from harm. Perfect! I thought and almost smiled in triumph. I held my hands above the page, mimicking the movements illustrated and began chanting...

"Eleka nahmen nahmen
Ah tum ah tum eleka nahmen
Eleka nahmen nahmen
Ah tum ah tum eleka nahmen...

"Let his flesh not be torn
Let his blood leave no stain
Though they beat him
Let him feel no pain
Let his bones never break
And however they try
To destroy him
Let him never die
Let him never die

"Eleka nahmen nahmen
Ah tum ah tum eleka nahmen
Eleka nahmen nahmen
Ah tum ah tum eleka... eleka..."

My hands were glowing a faint green, which meant there was little to no chance that the spell was working. I threw my hands up in frustration and cried aloud,

"Ugh! What good is this chanting?!
I don't even know what I'm reading!
I don't even know what trick I ought to try..."

I got up and paced about the room, tears dripping down my cheeks in despair. I stumbled over the edge of a rug and caught my balance on a shelf close by a window. Running over to it, I tried to gaze out, but it was too fogged up on the outside to see anything but my own reflection. I aggressively wiped the tears from my cheeks and spun around, lamenting,

"Kili, where are you?
Already dead and bleeding?
One more disaster I can add to my generous supply!"

Yes, I am a witch of sorts. Where Gandalf is a true wizard, I was but an apprentice sorcerer. He was training me along our quest to reclaim Erebor and slay the wicked dragon Smaug. I specialized in healing arts and spells. Thanks to Gandalf, I learned how to make charms to repell orcs, trinkets enchanted to give the bearer strength or agility in battle, lockets that held a spell so powerful it would send your enemy into a frenzy of terror just to see (I never made one of those lockets, and I intend to keep it that way), and many more tidbits of magic. Although... I messed up so many spells under Gandalf's mentoring he almost deemed me unteachable, and I am misunderstood and scorned or feared by most of those not in the Company. I am also a dwarvess, born at the end of the journey to find new homes for the old dwarves of Erebor after the evil dragon came and destroyed everything. I held a burning vengeance in my heart for Smaug that would not be satiated until he was dead, therefore my reasoning to join the Company of Thorin Oakenshield such a long time ago...
