My lovely Dianna,
Not a day goes by that I do not miss you, think of your beauty, grace, and perfection and wish that you were here beside me. Alas, I have not been able to visit you, and now it seems our time apart may continue for longer. I send news, the manner of so may turn to be good or perhaps faulty. I have volunteered on a journey, one that may determine the fate of Middle Earth as we know it, and I may not be able to write to you as often as I do now. Lothlorien is a beautiful kingdom. I remember you mentioning you wanted to travel here one day. My heart aches for you are not with me now. I trust you have a good life in Rohan. Does the king treat you well, as he promised me he would? Have you found friendship? You always loved horses; I remember a stable by the main gates. Do you ride often? I long to be there beside you, racing across the plains, so transfixes by your smile I forget I am riding, my horse stumbles and I fall. I can imagine your laughter as you read this. Keep your spirits up, remember that I love you forever. I will return to you as soon as I can.
Missing you always,
Legolas

My dearest Legolas,
I do hope this letter reaches you before you set out on your journey. I send all my love and wishes in the hopes you will return to me safe and sound. I will wait for you, no matter how long it takes to see you once again. I have a simple, but good life here in Rohan. The locals are kind and quiet, though the princess Eowyn has been a good friend to me. She is brave to stay in her family's royal home, for it seems the king has gone mad. His wicked steward, Grima Wormtongue, whispers lies and convicts innocents as traitors, and I fear he has orders from Sauron himself... Eowyn remains strong amid these turn of events, and I do as well. She and I ride along the plains sometimes, though each hoofbeat reminds me of you and how we used to ride together before I had to leave Erin Galen. How I miss the sound of your voice, the touch of your hand, your warm embrace. These days, I often find my eyes welling up with tears at a memory of you and I, but then I smile, for the good days will come soon again and we will make new marvelous memories. Carry my love with you on your journey. May it bring you strength and hope in the darkest times. I love you, always, and I will wait for the day of your return.
Missing you always,
Dianna

"Dianna!" called a soft voice from just outside her door. The young woman was so wrapped up in reminiscing that she did not hear the bidding. The memory was of the morning when she tried to teach Legolas the game of marbles. They were only friends at the time, though Dianna always seemed to feel a warmth in her heart whenever he was near her. The elven prince had acted confused no matter how many times she patiently explained it to him, and well over an hour passed before she noticed the twinkle in his eye and realized he was only pretending. She scolded him, but he didn't listen and only laughed at having fooled her so. She'd asked him why he'd acted this way and he had readily admitted to wanting to spend more time with her. Her cheeks had flushed and she quickly replied that she would always have time for him, to which he had smiled and gently taken her hand. Now, though, she had not seen Legolas in months, almost a year, and she missed him dearly. If only they could return to the days in Erin Galen, carefree and in love... That is, until Thranduil, the king and Legolas' father, found out and banished Dianna from the elven kingdom. She'd fled to Rohan, where she was now, listening to Eowyn, knock on the door and call her name.

Dianna sat up with a start and hurried to the door of her small room, opening it to see an excited Eowyn standing just beyond, her cheeks flushed and her smile wide. "We have visitors- one of whom is quite familiar to you!" the young princess teased and Dianna's eyes widened. "You mean-" "He's here! He came for you! Well, and other things, but isn't it romantic?" Eowyn swooned a little and Dianna laughed, pushing her teasing friend aside as she hurried down the hall. Halfway toward the kitchens, she paused and turned to see Eowyn looking amusedly at her. "I'm headed the wrong way, aren't I?" "Yes, they're gathered in the throne room." Her smile faded a little. "Uncle isn't acting right..." "It's that scoundrel, Grima Wormtongue!" exclaimed Dianna, shaking her head and hiking up her skirts to walk faster. "Don't worry, Eowyn, surely there is a way to snap your uncle from his trance." A minute later, she burst into the throne room, Eowyn hot on her heels, just in time to see an old, white-bearded wizard expel Saruman from King Theoden's mind.

The stout dwarf standing close behind Gandalf was the first to notice them. His bushy eyebrows raised and he declared, "And who are these two?" as if he was getting tired of meeting new people and having to remember their names. Dianna's heart skipped at the familiar white-blond hair of the elf beside the dwarf and she gave a small gasp as he turned around. They stood there for only a moment before rushing toward each other, smiles breaking across their faces. Legolas wrapped her in a fierce hug and she returned the embrace, that of which was rare, as he wasn't very touchy-feely. "You came back," she whispered, tears of joy twinkling at the edges of her eyes. "Of course I came back," he replied softly, both of them ignoring the surprised stares of most others in the room. Attention quickly returned to the king when he stood up and asked, "Where is my son?" and Legolas and Dianna stepped aside, into the shadow of a pillar.

They shared a tender kiss before the questions came rushing from each of the pair. "Why are you here? I thought, with your journey-" Dianna began, and Legolas, quite surprisingly, cut her off, "Yes, we're still on our way, and somehow we've arrived here. Are you alright-" "Yes, yes, I'm fine, are you?" "Yes- are you sure you are alright? In your last letter-" "I'm perfectly alright-" "Are you sure-" "Yes, and now you're here and-" "I love you," they chorused, smiling softly at each other. Legolas gently leaned his forehead against hers and asked softly, "Do you still have your ring?" She held up her hand and he smiled at the familiar blue stone set in silver, twisted to look like vines, on her finger. "You still want to..." "Marry you? Of course I do," The small frown on Dianna's face faded into a smile once more as she added, "I promised I would wait for you. I will wait as long as it takes for your father to change his mind." "He is unreasonable-" "I know. I know that better than anyone except you. And someday we will convince him. Someday he will give us his blessing."

Dianna leaned up and kissed his cheek. "At least I no longer have to miss you, for you are here with me now." "I... may not be able to stay-" "Shhh. Be in the moment. I will cherish whatever time we have together now." Legolas gently kissed her again and she leaned into the embrace. Perhaps the next day, they would be apart again. Maybe there would be more letters, signed off with 'missing you always'. Everything could change by tomorrow. They did not know, and so savored every second spent with each other. They stayed there, in the shadow of the throne room pillar, talking in soft voices, joyous and in love, for the rest of the evening, falling asleep only a short time before dawn in each other's arms.
