21. Dad threathens a terrorist

That night there was another explosion. Another Mandarin attack. It happened right at the Chinese theater. And Happy was there. He got hurt really bad and now he's in the hospital.

I don't think dad's slept yet when the phone started ringing. It wasn't an hour later when we got to the hospital. I just want to be with Happy. Dad does to. I feel terrible for him. I really hope he doesn't feel the pain right now. I know how much being awake can hurt sometimes.

A nurse came in a minute ago to check up on him. I'm scared he won't get better, they aren't even sure if he'll ever wake up. After a while dad says we should leave. We make our way through the hospital, and to the main entrance. When we get to the doors we can see all the reporters outside, waiting for dad.

"Just put these on Nova"

Dad hands me a pair of sunglasses. It's not even that sunny, it's more about the pictures.

"Don't say anything, just ignore them. Straight to the car, okay?"

I nod, placing the glasses over my eyes. We've done this a hundred times before, but it's still scary. I take dad's hand and keep close to him, practically gluing myself to his side. We walk outside and everyone starts to come for us. They yell questions at us that I don't understand half of the time, and I just ignore them the entire time. I hear a lot of questions about the Mandarin attack, a lot of 'Mister Stark!'  -and noise. A lot of noise. I feel their hands on me and it scares me. It still does. But I hold dad's hand tightly and he keeps me close to him. They can't get to me.

We get to the car and dad helps me in to my seat. He closes the door and walks over to the front. He's about to open the door when he turns towards this one guy. Everyone goes quiet while dad talks to him. They all look kind of, I don't know, shocked? After a little while of talking, he takes the guys phone and throws it at a wall. He says something else before getting in the car and driving away.

It's quiet for a minute until i can't stand it anymore.

"What happened dad?"

He stays quiet for a few more seconds before he lets out a sigh and says,

"I threatened a terrorist and gave him our home address."

I have to think about that for a second. Why would he do that? I think dad is very much done with the mandarin. I know I am. But I don't think this was his brightest idea ever. Pepper is going to be so mad.

When we get back to the mansion dad immediately goes down to his workshop. I go to the living room to find Pepper watching a newsreport about what happened at the hospital. By the looks of it, she's angry. She mumbles a few thing under her breath, and I don't thinks it's a bad thing that I didn't hear her.

"Come on Nova, let's get your stuff."

We go upstairs and pack my bags for the next few days. I'm supposed to leave to go to Maddie tonight. Happy was going to take me there, so Pepper already called Rhodey a while ago. He'll be here in an hour or so. Pepper says she doesn't want me to stay here. She and dad are leaving too. She also said some other things that I don't think I should have heard. Like bad things. The things they usually sensor on the tv and are considered inappropriate for people my age. It's very unlike Pepper. I guess she's very, very mad at dad.

I go downstairs to say goodbye to dad. He's busy with something. I don't know what. But I'll just let him. I know this is all hard for him. He's sad too.

"Dad, Rhodey is here!"

"Okay. Come here Squirt."

I go over to him and he pulls me into his lap. I sit down and lean into him a little.

"Give this to Harrison. You have your bracelets?"

I nod, showing him my wrists and taking the note he hands me. It's just some instructions for when I get a panic attack. I usually know what to do. But if it get's to bad dad usually has to call uncle Bruce. There's phone numbers of dad, Pepper and Bruce. Along with medicine descriptions for other things that could possibly go wrong.

God that makes me sound like an impossibly difficult to care for person. I'm not. I know it all myself. Dad's just a little worried. I get up and pull my sweater down a little. It'll be cold in Tennessee.

"Have fun, okay? And say hi to Harrison and Lisa from me. And call me, okay? Every night."

"Yeah dad I know. I've been on sleep overs before. It'll be just like when I go to the tower. Right?"

He lets out a sigh.

"I know Squirt. Come here."

I quickly turn around to hug dad. I give him one more tight squeeze before he gives me a quick kiss and I leave to go upstairs.

"Bye dad! Love you!"

"Bye smalls!"

I stick out my tongue at him and run over to Pepper, who's waiting for me upstairs. I quickly give her a hug while she starts fussing all over me.

"Do you have all your things?"

"Yes Pepper I already checked it twice."

"Sure?"

I make a face at her, causing her to let out a sigh.

"Call me or dad if something's wrong, alright? And..."

"I know Pepper." I interrupt. "I'll call you and I know what to do when something happens and I have my notes and I have your number and dad's and uncle Bruce's. Yes I'll be careful and yes I have my bracelets. Anything else?"

She smiles at me a little before pulling me into a hug. I wrap my arms around her, and let go a few seconds later.

"Bye Pep!" I say grabbing my backpack. I sling it over my shoulder and run over to Rhodey. Who's already waiting with my weekend bag.

"You ready?"

"Yeah I am."

We go over to the car and Pepper waits by the door. Rhodey helps me into the car and gets in himself. When we drive off, I'm hanging out of the window, frantically waving at Pepper.

"Bye bye bye! See you later Pepper!"

"Bye Nova!" she laughs. "Have fun!"

" Yeah I will! Bye bye bye bye!!"

I keep on waving and singing some randomly made up 'bye bye song' until I can't see her anymore. I close the window and look at the long, empty road ahead of us.
