Watching was the worst part.
Watching him in that machine, when all you could do was watch his heartbeat. You constantly felt helpless, wishing you could take him away from the pain that was his everyday life. The constant beep of the heart monitor was enough to make you wanna blow your brains out, but you carried on for Desmond. You had to.
You, Lucy, Shaun, Rebecca, and Desmond had barely escaped the warehouse hideout after the Templars found you all. Now, you were at the Auditore villa in the underground Sanctuary while Desmond was reliving Ezio's memories in Rome. You looked over at the heart monitor, watching the steady beat made you relax some. As long as that beat was still going, Desmond was still alive and that was all the motivation you needed. His heart rate was stable at the moment so you leaned back in your chair and sighed, happy to have a few seconds to yourself.
But you looked over at Desmond, and took this peaceful moment to admire his attractive features. From his beautiful brown eyes secluded from your sight by his eyelids, to his nose that was a little bit crooked from being broken and reset multiple times (probably from multiple bar fights when he worked at Bad Weather). Your eyes finally settled on the scar on his lips. The jagged skin that looked not so out of place compared to the smooth skin of his lips. He looked so young and peaceful, even though the past month had to have taken a toll on his mental health. You worried about him a lot, and you knew he had the weight of the world (literally) on his shoulders.
Still staring at him, the beeping of the heart monitor speeding up snapped you out of your love stricken trance. Looking over at it, you noticed his heart rate speeding up and Desmond wiggling around in the chair. Rebecca and Shaun looked over at him from their places, worry written on their features even though they knew you had it handled. Lucy rushed over, her hand flying to Desmond's and snatching it up between her greedy paws. He began thrashing around a little bit, his eyes squeezing shut, you quickly stood up and walked around to the computer that controlled the Animus on the other side of the heart monitor. "Do something!" Lucy snapped at you, her eyes wide and wild with worry. At least, what you thought was worry. Whether she was worried about Desmond possibly having a seizure or the possibility that he could die and the world couldn't be saved, you didn't know. You rolled your eyes, annoyed that she actually thought you weren't going to do anything and leave him like that.
"What do you think I'm doing, making margaritas!?" You snapped back, your fingers pausing over the keys as you replied to her. She didn't say anything, opting to just hold his hand and sob over his body instead of make another snarky comment at you. Your fingers resumed their typing as you logged into the Animus, finding the shut down button and clicking it. The Animus finally powered down as Desmond stopped moving around in his seat, eyebrows furrowed and eyes still clenched shut. "Step back, Lucy." You ordered, your voice stern as you laid your hand on her shoulder to grab her attention. She whirled around, surprise written on her features as she glared up at you, seeming offended for even suggesting such a thing. "He obviously doesn't want you here right now, so step back and let me work." You practically seethed as you removed your hand from your shoulder and gestures for her to move, referring to how he kept swatting her hand away. She finally gave in and flew out of her chair with a 'hmmph', stomping up the stairs to go have a little pity party about how you told her off. You smiled, feeling a sense of accomplishment.
As she was leaving, Shaun yelled after her. "Be back in 10 minutes! Abstergo is still looking for us, and we certainly can't take any chances!" He looked over at you and winked, and you snickered under your breath. She whipped her head around, and narrowed her eyes at Shaun before continuing to leave the Sanctuary. A groan pulled you back into the present, turning to see Desmond moving his head from side to side slowly. His eyebrows were still furrowed together and his face scrunched up in fear, starting to mutter something along the lines of "don't, please." Not knowing how to really comfort him, you made your way over to his side and sat in the chair, grabbing his hand which rested beside him. You were kinda afraid he would smack your hand away like he did Lucy, but you whispered reassuring things to him anyway. "It's okay, Des. Come on, wake up." You told him, easing him back into reality and trying to give him a sense of comfort and safety.
He squeezed your hand tight, trying to find something to ground him to reality, finding comfort in your hand holding his. Finally, he slowly opened his eyes, and the heart monitor went back to its normal beeping instead of the fast pace it was earlier. You breathed a sigh of relief as you closed your eyes, happy he was okay. "Hey, buddy." You said as you returned your gaze to his, a smile on your face as you looked into his deep brown eyes. Desmond's eyes were hooded as he looked around, his eyes finally settled on you and he smiled. A rare smile he had only reserved for you. He squeezed your hand again, and you reached over to the table and grabbed a cloth and wiped his head free of sweat that had collected due to the thrashing around he had done.
His eyes followed your movement as if he was in a daze of sorts, and after you were done they locked onto yours and stayed there. He just stared at you, unmoving as you still held his hand in comfort and even after you returned the cloth to the table. Your gaze locked with his, your eyebrows furrowing together in confusion as to why he was just staring at you. "What?" You told him, remembering you had to check his blood pressure and went to release his hand. You stood up out of your chair and before you could turn around, Desmond snatched your wrist and pulled you back around to face him. His hand slid down to grab your hand again, having you sit back down in the chair and you didn't think he had any intention of letting it go. "Des, what are you doing?" You asked, trying to suppress the blush rising in your cheeks. You hoped that no one was noticing what was going on between you two at the moment, but you figured Shaun and Rebecca had already returned to their previous duties after seeing Lucy stomp out.
"Admiring."
