. . .. . .
I looked in awe as a monorail sped over a big fair. Lights were stranded on the colourful roof of the fair. Crowds of people lined the entrance, all dressed in their nicest clothing. Steve, Bucky and I walked down the busy midway with people rushing past us in a hurry and cars that honked and beeped. The noises of people chattering, boots clacking on the ground, cars honking and machinery humming all mixed together to make a beautiful cacophony of sounds.
"I don't see what the problem is. You're about to be the last eligible man in New York. You know there're three and a half million women here?" Bucky's voice brings me back to reality, and I wonder why they were talking about women.
"I'd settle for just one."
Bucky waves at somebody in the distance, making both Steve and me look to who he was waving to. Across the midway, a girl waves back at us in front of a pavilion. Her blonde curled hair is let loose and she wears a pink frilled dress that is too girly for my liking. On top of the building she stands beside, a bold blue and red neon sign that said 'modern marvels' that flickered and blinked.
"Good thing I've taken care of that." Bucky grins at me and I stick my tongue out at him before smiling at Steve. He smiles back at me. That's a start. He then quickly whispers to Bucky,
"What'd you tell her about me?" I pretended I couldn't hear— but I could, because Steve's whispers aren't whispers at all.
Bucky grins, still waving. "Only the good stuff."
The truth is, Bucky told me nothing at all.
. . .
Exhibits line the entire hall of the Modern Marvels Pavillion. I stare at a glass box that holds a scarlet android.
"DR. PHINEAS HORTON PRESENTS...THE SYNTHETIC MAN!"
A fire extinguisher rests at the base. Bucky and his date, who I know as Connie hurries past the exhibits, not even daring to look at them. I narrow my eyes, confused at why they are even here if they aren't going to appreciate the exhibitions. From the reflection of the glass, I could see Steve awkwardly glancing at Bucky and then back to me, unsure of whether to go to Bucky or stay with his date, who was me. I turned to him, holding a hand out for him to hold.
"Shall we go?" Steve, surprised that I even held a hand out for him, paused before taking it. And then we ran as quickly as we could over to Bucky, reaching them after a while. I glanced at Steve as we walked the last few metres. He looked all puffed out and breathing hard but once he noticed I was looking at him, he smiled and there was a twinkle in his eyes. My lips instantly curled into a smile as well.
"You guys good there?" Bucky stared, confused at why Steve was out of breath.
"We're fine," Steve replied.
"Well then, let's go over to wh—"
"Oh my God, there he is!" An excited squeal comes out from Connie as she points at the stage that had bright red lights that screamed "STARK INDUSTRIES". She urges Bucky on, and I follow them as a crowd gathers by a stage.
"STARK INDUSTRIES PRESENTS..." A voice boomed from the speakers. I glanced around, panic rising as I realised that Steve was gone. How was I going to find him in this kind of crowd? Only a few seconds afterwards Steve reappears with a bag of peanuts in his hands and I allow my self to calm back down. I wave to him and he dodges people and squeezes through the gaps to get over to me. On stage, a (not-so) dashing Howard Stark stands with a 1942 cadillac. He seems to see a familiar face in the crowd and I realise that face was me. He walks over to me, winks and I groan. Connie giggles on the opposite side of me, thinking that he had winked at her. Pfft. No chance.
"Wait, you know him?" Steve whispers. He had noticed the wink.
"Ladies, you know how hard it can be putting on makeup in a car that's bouncing like a kangaroo on a trampoline." Howard begins.
"Yeah, he's a good friend of mine in the army. Not much more than that. He does like to flirt a lot though." I reply, basically screaming through the chattering of the crowd. Steve offers me the bag of peanuts. I grab a handful and start chomping on them like a hungry animal.
"Tanks." I say, my words jumbled as I munch on the peanuts.
"What if I told you that in just a few short years, your automobile wouldn't touch the ground at all?"
"Wait, you're in the army?" Steve asks.
Howard hits a button. The Cadillac rises, leaving its tire on the ground, bulky devices where the wheel should be. The crowd gasps at the flying car. I see Bucky and Steve gape, impressed. Not bad, not bad. But maybe hide those weird machinery coming out from the car?
"Ho-ly cow." I snicker at Bucky's choice of words.
"Yup, I train the men there. It's just that." Yeah, definitely just that if you take away the part where I have powers and use them to help America fight Nazis but I can't just tell some random person I met today that right? Steve just nodded and continued eating the peanuts.
"With Stark Technology Gravitic Reversion (patent pending), you'll be able to do just tha-"
There is a pop and an explosion. The car slams onto the stage. Silence consumes the stage. I start laughing all of a sudden, not just because Howard failed, but because of the awkward silence that ensued after that. People around me glared at me and I saw that even Howard gave me a raised eyebrow.
"What?" I said smirking. Howard coughed and continued.
"I did say a few years, didn't I?"
The audience applauds. Howard walks back over to me and whispers to me. "Can you meet me backstage?" I glance at Steve. He looks around, sheepish before spotting something in the distance. I glance back at Howard.
"Sorry, I'm on a date." I hear Howard groan as I try to follow Steve through the crowd of people.
