. . .. . .
"Faster, ladies! Come on. My grandmother has more life in her, God rest her soul. Move it!" Peggy shouted at the recruits. I walked with my favourite doctor Ab and my not so favourite Colonel Phillips to the group of trainees who were doing pushups.
"You're not really thinking about picking Rogers, are you?" Phillips turned to Ab.
"I am more than just thinking about it. He is the clear choice." I grinned hearing his words.
"When you brought a ninety pounds asthmatic onto my army base, I let it slide. I thought, what the hell? Maybe he'll be useful to you, like a gerbil. I never thought you'd pick him." And that is why, ladies and gentlemen, he is my least favourite person in the world apart from Hodge.
"Up," Peggy shouted out the command as we neared them.
"You stick a needle in that kid's arm and it's gonna go right through him." Phillips continues, watching Steve struggle whilst training with the other new recruits.
"Come on, girls." I hear Peggy taunt them as the recruits start to tire. Steve collapses and rolls over to take a breather.
"Look at that. He's making me cry." I narrow my eyes at Phillips.
"Phillips. Do not judge people like that. He is probably better than all the other men here." I scold him.
"Physically?" He raises an eyebrow at me.
"No, but in personality and heart, yes."
"Topaz is correct. I am looking for qualities beyond the physical." The old man speaks up and nods to me with a smile. I smile back.
"Do you know how long it took to set up this project?" Colonel Phillips asked him.
"Yeah, I know."
"All the grovelling I had to do in front of Senator What's-His-Name's committees?"
"Brandt. Yes, I know. I am well aware of your efforts."
"Then throw me a bone. Hodge passed every test we gave him. He's big, he's fast, he obeys orders. He's a soldier."
"He's a bully," Ab objected. I coughed.
"You mean ugly and idiotic asshole. I swear on my life if that guy gets the serum I will be opting out." Phillips glares at me and turns back to Ab.
"You don't win wars with niceness, doctor." He grabs a fake hand grenade from one of the boxes. "You win war with guts."
Colonel Phillips throws the grenade at where the new recruits are training and yells.
"Grenade!" All the soldiers scramble away like chickens but one. Steve. He jumps on top of it, covering it with his body. I grin at his boldness.
"Get away! Get back!" Steve turns to all of us and shouts. I can feel his fear from here but he stays put, waiting for the grenade to go off. 30 seconds pass of silence. Nothing happens. The officer coughs.
"It was a dummy grenade. All clear. Back in formation."
Steve pulls himself up from the ground and stares at Colonel Phillips, Ab and I in mild confusion. "Is this is a test?"
Ab looks at Phillips with a twinkle in his eyes, knowing he was right about choosing Steve. I walk over to him and give him a pat on the back as I hear the Colonel sigh.
"He's still skinny."
. . .
Later on the day Peggy and I were doing some paperwork in the office while Phillips was lecturing the recruits. Luckily Peggy was there to keep me in check or I would not have done as much work I had done now. Jazzy music was playing on the radio as we stapled and filed the papers, filling the room with a calm atmosphere that was slightly unusual to me.
"Hey, what's going on with you and Steve?" Peggy quipped, taking the alone time between us two as an advantage. One thing to know about Peggy, was that she lived to gossip.
"What do you mean?" I stated boringly. I completely despised personal questions, even if they were raised by someone close to me like her.
"Are you two a thing? Because it seems like you've known him before all of this, "
"No, we're just friends. I knew him because he was my date to that New World Exposition thing."
"Oh really? And it's World Exposition of Tomorrow." She grinned at me. I threw a bunch of scrunch up paper at her.
"Peggy, come on! Even if I did like him, he would be so weirded out by me."
"How?"
"My powers. I'm an alien for gods sake!" I exclaimed. I didn't want her to know that it wasn't really that I was scared of. It was something else.
"I wasn't freaked out!" She frowned.
"You're Peggy! He's going to hate for it, even if we aren't a thing," I wasn't talking about ny powers anymore. Peggy puts a hand on my shoulder and squeezes it gently.
"Topaz, if it is one thing I've learnt from observing Steve during the last few days is that he doesn't judge anyone by their cover but by their actions. And heck, you've made a good impression on him."
. . .
