. . .. . .
I found myself stuck in the car with two more people the next morning, driving through Brooklyn. Peggy had taken the full responsibility in taking us to the lab in one piece, which I could never do, while Steve and I sat at the back. He glanced out from the window and I picked at my fingernails.
"I know this neighbourhood. I got beat up in that alley. And that parking lot. And behind that diner." Steve suddenly blurted out. I could see Peggy raise an eyebrow from the rearview mirror.
"Did you have something against running away?" She asked.
"You start running they'll never let you stop. You stand up, push back. Can't say no forever, right?"
"I know a little of what that's like. To have every door shut in your face." I muttered, staring back down at my scarlet coated nails.
"I guess I just don't why you'd wanna join the army if you're a beautiful dame. Or a beautiful... a woman. A Lieutenant, not a dame! You are beautiful, but..." I look up from my nails, giggling at his flushed face and stuttered words. I had no idea what he had said. Peggy turned back to grin at me and Steve as we paused for people to go by.
"You have no idea how to talk to a woman, do you?"
"This is probably one of the longest conversations I've had with one - well two. The other was when Topaz saved from that cinema dude. Women aren't exactly lining up to dance with a guy they might step on."
"You must have danced?" I asked exasperatedly. Steve fidgeted with his hands when he saw my astonishment.
"Well, asking a woman to dance always seems so terrifying. And the past few years just didn't seem to matter that much. Figured I'd wait."
"For what?" I say. He then stares at me with his eyes that always remind me of rippling waves at the sea. I find the urge to keep staring.
"The right partner."
Pink dusts in my cheeks and I smile gently as I look down to my lap. My heart warms at his statement. Listening to those words, I wonder how big his heart really is, and who truly deserves him.
. . .
It felt like an eternity passed before we arrived at the lab that was disguised as an 'antique shop'. We got out of the car, my mind still drifting away. Steve seemed confused at why we were here.
