TOPAZ'S POV
The recruits stood in line, all of them buff and stood tall, except for one. Steve stood there wearily, glancing around for familiarity face so he could feel less nervous. He looks up at Peggy and I as we walked up to them.
"Recruits, attention! Gentlemen, I'm Lieutenant Velasquez, this is Agent Carter," I gesture over to Peggy. "We supervise all operations for this division." A tall guy with a smirk on his sun tanned face spoke up.
"What's with the accent, Queen Victoria? Thought I was signing up for the U.S. Army." I grit my teeth, slowly calming myself back down as I tell myself that I've faced worse things than an arrogant asshole like this man.
"What's your name, soldier?" I said.
"Gilmore Hodge, your Majesty." Peggy placed a hand on my shoulder as she realises what I was going to do to him.
"Step forward, Hodge." He steps forward as the smirk grows wider on his face and the guys next to him cheer him on.
"Put your right foot forward."
"Mmm... We gonna wrassle? Cause I got a few moves I know you'll like." His ugly ass even then winks at me. I was so shocked that I froze, letting Peggy punch him hard in the face as I hear his nose crack. It immediately started bleeding and he held a hand up to his nose. Red slowly seeped thrpigh the gaps of his fingers. The recruits laughed at his pain while I glared at Peggy.
"Why didn't you let me punch him?!" I hissed at her quietly.
"You know why. You would have knocked him straight out unconscious." I clicked my tongue.
"He would've deserved it." A rumble of a car and footsteps make us turn around.
"Lieutenant Velasquez, Agent Carter."
"Colonel Phillips." We said in unison. Was he gonna tell us off for punching Hodge?
"I see you're breaking in the candidates. That's good!" I grinned at the approval. He then turns to Hodge. "Get your ass up out of that dirt and stand in that line at attention till somebody comes tells you what to do."
Hodge scrambles back up, as he wiping the blood away from his nose and onto his pants. "Yes, sir."
Colonel Phillips then steps forward to address the new army recruits. "General Patton has said that wars are fought with weapons but they are won by men. We are going to win this war because we have the best men..." He trails off as he sees Steve and glances at Erskine before continuing to talk. "And because they're gonna get better. Much better. The Strategic Scientific Reserve is an Allied effort made up of the best minds in the free world. Our goal is to create the best army in history. But every army starts with one man. At the end of this week we will choose that man. He will be the first in a new breed of super-soldiers. And they, will personally escort Adolf Hitler to the gates of Hell."
"I thought you promised that would be me..." I scoff under my breath. Peggy elbows me on the side.
. . .
I watched Steve painstakingly climb the rope wall, much slower than all the other soldiers. Peggy and I were supposed to be supervising and grading the soldiers on how well they performed, but couldn't but stare at Hodge pushing back down Steve just as he reached the top.
"What an asshole that is," I mutter. Peggy nods in agreement when she would normally tell me off for using such insults.
After that, the recruits had to crawl in the mud with a rifle under some barbed wire. Steve was doing good, but of course, Hodge had to ruin it once more. I scowl and hear Peggy 'tsk' with a face of disapproval.
. . .
I tapped my hands on the dash of the car as we waited for Steve and some other trainees finish running the course. Steve is a little behind the trainees and nobody seems to try and help him.
"Pick up the pace, ladies! Let's go! Double time! Come on! Faster! Faster! Move! Move!" Sergeant Duffy yells. They finally arrive at the flagpole, all breathing hard with hands on their knees. "Halt! That flag means we're only at the halfway point. First man to bring it to me gets a ride back with Agent Carter. Move, move!"
"Come on! Get up there!" A soldier yells. I giggled as the soldier tries to climb up the pole but just slides down.
"If that's all you got, this army's in trouble! Get up there, Hodge! Come on! Get up there! I've only seen Lieutenant Velasquez do it!" Surprised looks glance over to me. I wave at them and give a smile as I felt my ego grow bigger and bigger from their looks of disbelief. Sergeant Duffy coughs. "Before that, it was somebody from 17 years ago. Now fall back into line! Come on, fall in! Let's go! Get back into formation! Rogers! I said fall in!"
Steve pulls a nail out at the bottom of the pole causing it to fall over. It lands with a thud, before the rest of the trainees murmur in surprise. I snicker and applaud his smart thinking.
He gives the flag to Sergeant Duffy who is speechless. "Thank you, sir."
He climbs into the car. Peggy congratulates him and I give him a big thumbs up.
"Great job you did back there Stevo," I say and pat his back in pride. He stares back at me and laughs, his blue eyes that seemed as blue as the atlantic ocean crinkling up in happiness and I smile.
