It took a few days to get back into the rhythm, but once the jetlag wore off, I was back in business. "Looks like you had so much fun," Stephanie smiled while we bottle fed the twins at her and Dustin's house, "did the kids love it?"
"They did, very much." I cooed as I fed Aiden, "I can't believe how big you boys are." At four months, their true personalities began shining. "Who looks like who?" I asked Stephanie.
"They're so similar. But I think Aiden has more of Dustin and Kyle has my nose for sure." She smiled as we turned the boys to burp them. "It's getting easier, the first three weeks were terrifying. Part of me feels like my body didn't go through this so it came as shock, does that make sense?"
"I think so. I remember being pregnant with Easton and feeling so tired by month eight leading up to his birth." I shrugged, "At least you didn't gain baby weight." she laughed, "You're honestly doing great. They're healthy, fed, happy....you're doing it all right. Genetically they're you and Dustin. It doesn't matter that they didn't come out of you."
"Thanks, that means a lot." She smiled, "You wouldn't believe some of the stuff we see online because of that."
"Girl, don't even," I rolled my eyes, "you can't read that stuff. I had so much flack after each pregnancy. Like sorry, was I supposed to look twenty five forever because that's a joke."
She sighed, "It's not easy being a woman, that's for sure." We laid the boys down for their nap, catching up about work and life. "How's Sutton, she's really growing eh?"
"Oh my gosh, too much too fast." I sipped my tea. "She and Hunter were at each other in Australia over a few wardrobe choices." Stephanie shook her head, "I didn't know she owned a crop top."
"Oh my gosh, did he lose it?" She asked, and I nodded.
"Not like, lost it crazy but he was not happy. In other news, she has her auditions for NSA on February fifth." Our time together came to an end as I headed to Antitoch to pick the kids up from school.
"Mom, can you help me write a song?" Sutton asked, unpacking her backpack at the table.
"Yeah, sure." I said, "What were you thinking of writing about? Have you started?"
"Well, Taylor Swift was writing songs at my age, I need to get this ball rolling." She handed me her agenda and I signed off on it before answering her.
"I didn't write a real song until I was twenty six."
"Actually?" I nodded, telling her what I wrote and why.
"Songwriting is something a little natural but it can be learned. The easiest songs are the ones that come from your heart." After dinner, Hunter took the boys golfing while Sutton and I sat in the piano room with our guitars.
"I've always been the kind of girl
So afraid to tell the world
What I've got to say
I have this dream
Right inside of me
I'm gonna let it show
It's time to let you know
This is real
This is me
I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be now
Gonna let the light shine on me
Now I've found who I am
There's no way to hold it in
No more hiding who I wanna be
This is me "
Sutton looked at me, her eyes were bright and her jaw was hanging. "That is incredible." She played through it and I sat back and watched her as her fingers danced along the strings, her voice was magnetic.
"One more time?" I asked, opening the recorder app on my phone, and she smiled.
"You have to hear this." I handed Hunter my phone and he played the recording.
"Wow," he listened intently, "that's so good."
"We wrote it together, obviously it's not done," I said, raising my hands up, "but she asked me to write a song with her." I sat criss cross and put my hand over Hunter's, "Is it too much to talk about a record deal for her, like now or when she's sixteen...." He sighed.
"We knew we would have this conversation one day," his blue eyes searched mine, "if we discuss it, we can be a united front should she want to pursue this."
"It's a matter of when. She's pretty confident this is what she wants to do."
"Fair enough. It's all I ever wanted for myself and I understand where she's coming from."
"If anyone can understand her, it's you." I entangled me fingers in his, "What if we just sit back a bit and see how her NSA auditions go. I want her to finish school."
"Without a doubt." Hunter said, "That's not negotiable." We kissed on that and cuddled up for bed.
"I love you Hunter, so, so much."
"I love you Jenna." He placed a kiss on my forehead before turning off the light.
