"Where's the cheese?" My mom asks herself as we walk aisle to aisle. She was really exciting about visiting this new supermarket, she loves it. I sigh and follow behind her as she pushes the trolley. "Do you want any cheese, honey?"

"Mom, you know I don't like cheese" I huff and cross my arms. The same strand of hair falls in front of my face for what feels like the billionth time today. I groan pretty loudly in frustration and brush all my hair back but to no use. I should have brought my hair band.

"Honey, calm down. Jesus Christ... Okay" she turns and scans the various types of cheese from different European countries. She ends up going with some fancy French fromage, of course.

"Mom, I thought dad was supposed to be coming today" I distract her from her thoughts, probably wondering whether to make an omelette or an Italian Pizza. "Mom?" I call her again.

"What?! No, he's coming tomorrow. He had a change of plans". You mean you had a change of plans... I bite my tongue and huff again. We arrive at the dairy section and I check myself in the mirrors they have on the side of the fridges, God knows why they put them there. I look like utter crap to be honest - Dark circles under my eyes, dirty AND messy hair... it's not that I haven't slept, it's just one of those off days. I hope I don't stay looking like this until tonight, I have my date with Charlie. My mood and state is kinda making me not want to go but I can't cancel. I don't cancel plans. Mom asks me to get any yoghurt I want, I go for the Greek one and place it in the cart before she makes her way to the fruit.

"Mom" before I even begin my sentence she rolls her eyes. She's having an off day too aka acting slightly bitchier than usual. "What time is it? We can't take too long I have a date tonight"

"Do you? You didn't tell me that"

"I'm telling you now"

"What? With the Australian guy?" she asks, curiosity getting the best of her. No mother, I no longer think of the "Australian guy".

"He's not Australian. And no, an actual American this time. His name's Charlie. He's really nice"

"After seeing the non Australian guy, I'm wondering if our definition of nice is the same" she says in a slightly lower tone. That one hurt a little. Sometimes she says things without thinking. I don't reply and she realises what she's said. And the shitty thing is, I'm upset about it because I know she's right. She's always right.

She then realises what she's said and sighs "I'm sorry Lilah. You know how I get sometimes. I just don't want you to get hurt, you know?"

I ignore what she's said. "My date is at 7. Charlie's picking me up" I mumble and cross my arms again. She doesn't say anything back again.

When we arrive home I help her put away all the food in the cupboards before crashing on the couch in the room to watch some TV movie I've never seen before as my mom makes some stir-fry. Charlie and I confirmed the date for our... well, date over text messages and like he said we're going to the same place to went before. I don't actually know what the place is called, I should ask him.

My eyelids begin to feel a little heavy, I didn't sleep very well last night. Hopefully my mood lifts before tonight. As I begin to drift in and out of sleep, my phone buzzes a couple times across the room. I groan and ignore it until I totally fall asleep.

I wake up to the sound of some crime show. I open my eyes and see my mom sitting on the other couch next to mine eating some sunflower seeds, I rub my eyes and sit up.

"Oh you're awake" she turns her head to me "You were sleeping for quite a while"

I rub my entire face this time "What time is it now?"
