Sarah sat on the kitchen counter as Rick made them breakfast. Her knees were folded into her arms.
"What about Jane Austen?" She asked.
Rick laughed as he flipped over some sausage.
"Y-you've got to think higher of me than that."
Sarah shrunk down, not saying much after.
"You're kidding." He said as he looked her over. "Geez, are you a romantic novel type, then?" He burped.
"Not by rule, just that when I want to read for entertainment, it does the job. If I want to read for knowledge, I'll find something else." She shrugged.
He hummed, serving her a plate and took it to the dinner table.
"Do you read Sci-Fi?" He asked, sitting down.
She scrunched her nose, "when I was younger, I'm more into dystopian life rather than actual sci-fi in that aspect."
"So, The Hunger Games?" He asked.
"No, more like 1984, The Handmaid's Tale."
He made an unhumored sound.
She looked up from her food. "What?"
"I was thinking of taking you to an adventure." He burped.
"Where to?" Sarah asked, wondering what it had to do with her book genre preferences.
He smiled. "A little of a Hunger Game-y place."
She grinned, "I'd love that."
"Alright, a Rick and Sarah adventure!"
She laughed at him before finishing her breakfast, "I'm going to go change, meet you in the garage?"
"Y-yeah!" He called as he put the dishes in the sink.
She hustled towards the room they now shared.
It was a really tight space and sometimes she'd wake up to her hitting the floor because of the size of the bed but it was enough. They didn't really spend much time there.
Above his bed was a series of papers connected with colored yarn, things that sometimes kept him up at night whenever he didn't feel like going to the garage.
An alien hookah stood on a table and underneath laid a guitar he'd never actually touched in front of her.
She made a mental note to ask him to play for her.
When she was done dressing up, she jogged to the garage where Rick was collecting a couple things from a box.
"Gun." He told her, handing it to her.
She took it, attaching it to her belt.
"Are you ready?" He asked.
"Yeah." She said as she finished braiding her hair.
He shot the Portal Gun and extended his hand out to her, she grabbed it and they jumped in together.
They landed in an alley behind what looked like an abandoned building.
"Sta-URP-y alert." He told her.
She nodded and walked behind him, her arm just at grabbing distance.
When they walked over to the street, it was all empty, old cars laid abandoned, the windows on the shops were broken.
"This looks more like The Walking Dead than The Hunger Games." Sarah said.
He didn't say anything, something in her told her he agreed.
"Rick?"
"I-I might've put the wrong coordinates." He admitted, backing down into the alley.
She tripped as his feet backed into hers.
"Shit." He said and took her arm to lift her up.
"Let's just see whats up in here, unless you were looking for something?"
He shook his head, "not really."
She grabbed his hand, "lets poke around then."
They walked into one of the empty shops first, finding the last printed newspaper.
She passed it to him, "definitely Walking Dead."
The cover story read 'Experimental Drugs Posses Dead's Brains?!' in bold letters.
Rick took a closer read as Sarah drifted away. "Don't walk too far." He warned her.
"Yeah." She nodded, turning to see the stuff they had there.
"Is it wrong to take stuff from here I'm too lazy to buy over there?" She asked.
"N-URP-o."
"Condoms?" She offered.
Rick turned to her, "do you need them?"
Sarah laughed, "no, just offering. This oven ain't on, don't worry."
Rick panicked as he saw the creature behind her, shooting it in the head.
Sarah turned to it and saw it's other two friends behind her. "Oh my god."
She pointed the gun at them and shot the things in the head.
Sarah grabbed something from the shelf and walked back to Rick.
"Let's go, they could be attracted by noise." She said.
He walked behind her, she looked completely in her element.
"Were you ever into comic books?" He burped.
She took a moment to answer, shooting down two more zombies coming towards them while they crossed to another street. "Not really."
He nodded, shooting behind him.
The galloping of hooves made her turn and she met with a sheriff on a horse.
"Oh my god, this is The Walking Dead." Sarah snorted.
"Who are you?" The sheriff asked, his face in a smolder.
Rick laughed, "what the fuck?"
"Shut up." Sarah shoved him. "Names are Rick and Sarah. Who are you?"
"I'm Sheriff Mick Jimes."
Sarah turned to Rick, a smile on her face, "oh, what the fuck?"
"Where are we?" Rick asked.
"Atlanta, mid-city too, you want to get off the big city if you want to survive. Too many of them creatures." He said.
"Can you help us?" Sarah asked. "Do you have a camp or something?"
Rick and Sarah took a step back.
"Not really, I'm just here. Trying to find my son and wi-" he started screaming, a zombie grabbed on to his leg.
"Do you know how to ride?" She asked Rick, he nodded.
He took the horse from the sheriff and pulled her up with them.
"Was that an asshole move?" Sarah asked.
"Probably." Rick laughed, riding off.
She put her arm around him, her other hand going off to shoot the zombies that went after them.
Rick laughed as he did the same.
"This is the most fun I've had in a while." She admitted.
"Stick with me, baby." He responded, laughing as he shot the gory creatures coming at them.
Sarah grinned at him, her arm squeezing him to her for a second.
It felt so nicely secure to have him with her, it felt right.
It felt like that was her Rick, her only Rick, just as much as she was his Sarah.
She wondered why they had to meet in that point of their lives.
It seemed a little idiotic, to have him have kids, to have him date that Unity (twice) to finally meet her.
She hadn't even been borne yet when he had met his wife- Beth's mother.
Why did it have to be her being 23 and him being 70?
Couldn't destiny wait?
Couldn't destiny speed it up?
But the thing about destiny, Sarah concluded with a sigh, was that it was a bigger bitch than karma could ever be.
She was stuck with Rick being as old as he was, and she was stuck with the eye-opening idea that, because of his age and his recklessness, he'd pass away before she even got to be the age he was now.
Unless he decided to do something about it.
"Why do you have so many robotic modifications?" She asked him, curious and suspicious.
Rick kept galloping down the road, finding a highway he could go into the woods for.
"I get attacked like twenty times a week, Sarah." He said, as if it was obvious. "I," he burped, "need to arm myself."
She nodded then frowned, "is that why you're so strong? Like-" she blushed and for a moment she was glad Rick could turn to see her because of his horse riding, "like when we fuck, is that why you can do the crazy shit you do."
Rick's mouth turned into a grin, "w-well yeah but also it's mo-URP-stly just me."
Sarah laughed, "right."
He laughed with her, "I'm serious."
She sighed as they got into the woods, the speedy jumps calming to a sway.
"I like this." She said, "the woods. I never got to see the woods at home."
"Where are you from?"
"Phoenix." She whispered, her hand reaching to touch the leaves that reached down to her from the trees.
Rick noticed the way she spoke now, softer, kinder. She wasn't in general a loud person but she seemed to always have something to say back.
Always had a witty remark of her own to say to him, always tried to snap back at his crude ways.
"What was Arizona like?" He asked.
Her voice didn't falter to say the first thing on her mind, the game they had been playing since they had woken up was too easy for her, it was hard for him.
She was so simple, either hated something or liked it too much, he always seemed to have variations of the two.
"Lonely." She frowned, "and hot."
He didn't say anything after that, making a mental note of her like for trees- forests- before they decided to go back home from their short adventure.
