"O-oh so you can stand here for- what?- eight hours but you can't go on adventures with Morty and I?"
Sarah sighed, happy she was placed to cashier at the cosmetics part of the superstore, it was mostly empty.
"Rick, please, I'm working." She pleaded, her hands going to the basket full of returned items she had put back on their shelves.
He sighed, "this is a horrible job anyway! Your stupid minimum wage is basically slavery, that vest makes you look fat and-"
"Rick, do you think I don't know this? I agree, I spend nine hours a day getting paid to listen to shitheads yell at me, I get it. But I need to start making money again."
"W-what for?" He challenged.
"I can't just stay in Beth's house." She whispered.
His face turned serious.
Her cheeks flushed as she realized he didn't want her to leave.
"Look, you can stay there because you're family, I'm not. I'm just a random Walmart cashier that got involved into something she wasn't even supposed to know about."
A customer walked into the area, cautious about the situation.
"It's alright, good morning." She told her with a smile.
Rick stared at her, "you're one stupid bitch, you know. Y-you can't even go take a piss without one of them trying to come and take you and now you want to go get yourself a mundane studio apartment?"
For once, she noticed how weird it looked for everyone else, them talking the way they did, the way he leaned over at her when he spoke to her and the blush on her cheeks while they was that huge age gap. She was finally aware of it but she still didn't care.
She raised her hand to place it on his cheek, "relax, I'll be fine. Getting an apartment takes time, anyway, I won't be leaving soon. Right now, I need to stand here and sell eyeliner to magicians."
He scoffed but stood aside, his body resting against a shelf.
"I'll look around." He burped.
She turned to him with a smile and proceeded to check out someone.
Two hours later, he was still standing there, staring at her work, waiting until it was time to go home.
He groaned, "at what time do you get out?"
"Now, I'm just waiting until my replacement comes in." She responded.
"How long have you been here?" He asked.
"Nine mundane hours."
He stared at her, "you mean to tell me you got here at 6am?"
She smiled at herself as she arranged the bills in her cash register, making sure they all faced the same way.
He had not been awake when she'd gone to work, had simply left a note under his room after having a coffee with Beth who would wake up early on occasion.
Beth didn't seem to mind her father bringing her along, and seem to notice the connection between them as soon as Sarah had been introduced.
Sarah couldn't help but think it had to do with the fact that Sarah was now one more reason why Rick would not leave.
When Ariana came in to replace her as cashier, Sarah signed off the register and walked towards the back of the Walmart, Rick walking beside her.
"You-URP-re going to get a lot of weird looks, you know." Rick said.
Sarah sighed, "why?"
Rick put his arm over her shoulders, "this whole soulmate shit, I saw you," he burped, "looking all anxious around you. If this is really what you want, which I'm sure you'll change your mind, you're going to get a lot of those looks."
She stopped behind an empty isle, "I don't care about that, I care about getting fired, Rick."
He smiled, messing with her hair as she took off her vest and folded it.
"I'll be right back." She told him as she went into the backroom to stuff her things back in her locker and signing off for the day.
Rick was sitting on a bench outside the door.
"Do you want to go get ice cream?" She asked, putting her hair down from its braid.
His face brightened, "hell yeah."
He took her hand and they walked out the doors, the car parked in two spaces.
"Imagine if we would've come out and it had gotten towed." She chuckled.
"It had a defense system, the tow truck and the driver would've been bo-URP-th been denigrated."
Sarah frowned in horror at the machine, saying "nice."
Rick laughed as they got in, driving off into a portal  for "the best ice cream of all dimensions".
They walked in and Rick spoke first to the counter lady, asking for a chocolate mint cone.
"I want raspberry." Sarah pipped in.
They sat down as they ate their cones, Sarah had a funny thought.
"So, is this our first date or what?" She asked, a grin hiding behind the cone.
Rick glared at her, "shut up."
She laughed.
"Shut up." He repeated.
She shook her head, "I'm just joking. But you know-"
"I could literally just leave you here and head back." He told her.
She flinched at the threat but didn't say anything back.
"Is that really what you're afraid of?" He asked after a moment of silence.
She looked up at him, "it's not as fun as you think, being thrown around like that. Has anyone ever thrown you away?"
He didn't say anything, but in his expression Sarah saw something.
She looked down at her ice cream. "Can I ask what her name was? Or his, I don't care."
Rick licked the ice cream, "it was more of a them, a collective mind."
She rose her eyebrows, "that's interesting, what does that mean?"
"They were able to get inside a whole species' mind and control them respectively but they were all them. Their name was Unity."
She smirked a little and whispered, "Unity"
She wasn't aware that she had competition, the feeling of jealousy was fairly new to her, she'd always been too much of a simple girl, way too distant from the usual needs and wants of everyone else.
"S-she dumped me, though, so all that is," he burped, "shit that doesn't matter anymore."
Sarah nodded, "that's interesting. I didn't think Ricks- any Rick- was affected by such things. You're otherworldly, as metaphorically as literal, to me sometimes."
"Don't suck my dick that hard." Rick burped.
Sarah laughed.
