Maria let out a gasp and covered her mouth at the sight in front of her. "Shawn, you didn't!"
He smirked at her. "I did. Why do you think I had you change into pajamas before we came?" It was true. After their iHeartRadio interview, Shawn had taken her home and insisted she change into warm pajamas. She came out unashamedly wearing a fleece panda onesie with black uggs. "I knew you would be happy with just a movie and cuddling on the couch but I thought you deserved something a little more special."
She smiled brightly. Shawn had gone all out for her birthday evening. He had brought her to the rooftop patio of his future condo and rearranged it with a loveseat facing a sheet draped against the wall and a projector with his laptop just behind the loveseat. The sheet was lined with dimmed fairy lights and blankets and pillows were propped up with the loveseat. Finally, a table full of her favorite snacks and drinks sat in front of the loveseat.
"You are literally the best boyfriend that has ever been." She said finally. She threw her arms around his neck. He chuckled and kissed her temple, wrapping his arms around her waist. "Thank you... for everything."
"There is another reason I brought you here." Shawn said suddenly. She pulled away and looked at him curiously. He gently took her hands in his. "I wanted to make sure you liked it here."
"Of course I like it here." She told him, eyebrows furrowing. "But why would that be so important?"
He bit his lip nervously. She ran her thumbs over his knuckles. What the hell could make Shawn Mendes nervous? "Because I want you to live here with me." Her eyes widened. Did he really just... "I want to move in together." So he did.
"Shawn, I..." She started but he cut her off.
"I know it's a little soon, especially with the album coming out." He ran a hand through his hair. "But I've thought about this a lot and..."
"Shawn!" She cut him off with a smile on her face. "I don't think it's soon at all. I mean, even if I move in after the album comes out, we'll have been together for over a year. And if we're talking about doing things 'a little too soon'..." She trailed off with a small, slightly nervous smile.
She took off the onesie's hood and undid the zipper just a bit. She slid the shoulder down and his eyes widened at the new tattoo she had gotten earlier today. Wrapping around her left bicep was what looked to be a strip of old movie film and in each of the squares where the action of the movie would be was a word, reading out 'how wonderful life is while you're in the world'.
He looked at Maria in slight shock. "You got a tattoo for me?"
She nodded. "I've gotten one for every year since I was adopted. They were each supposed to represent the year itself." She shrugged and looked at the tattoo with a small smile. "I felt it was appropriate. Do you like it?"
He smiled brightly at her. "I love it!" He leaned down and pressed his lips to hers.
She smiled against his lips before pulling away. "I'm glad because... that's not the only one I got today." He raised an eyebrow. She pulled her hair from her left ear and turned it towards him. Right where the music note was before that bastard cut it off, was the letters SM, his initials.
His honey brown eyes brightened and she smiled in response. He cupped her cheek in his hand. "You are so incredible, Maria Peters." He said quietly.
She closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around his waist, laying her head on his chest. "Not nearly as incredible as you are, Shawn Mendes." He smiled and kissed her hair lightly. "Now I'm sure you have some of my all time favorite movies and it is still my birthday."
He laughed and released her so she could fix her onesie. "So what shall we watch first, Ms. Bow?" She giggled at 'The It Girl' reference.
She flipped her hood up and smirked. "Take a guess, superstar."
He mirrored her smirk. "Well since I know you, I know it's going to be something starring Audrey Hepburn." She smiled sweetly and felt her heart skip a beat that he knew her so well. "Which do you feel like? Sabrina, My Fair Lady, or Roman Holiday?" She plopped down on the love seat and turned to look at him with an innocent smile. He chuckled and nodded. "My Fair Lady it is then."
She clapped delightedly while he pulled the movie up on his laptop. He grabbed a blanket as he came around the loveseat. She smiled brightly when he sat next to her, allowing her to snuggle into his side before draping the blanket over both of them. She felt him trail his fingers up and down in her arm as the beginning orchestra began.
She leaned up and kissed his jaw. "Don't worry. We'll watch Rebel Without A Cause next, Mr. Brando."
He leaned his head back on the couch dramatically. "Thank the Lord."
She rolled her eyes. "Come on, this is a classic musical!" She defended.
He scoffed. "Hepburn didn't even do her own singing."
"That is beside the point." Maria shot back. "See, that attitude is why I didn't call you James Dean." He laughed and rolled his eyes. "Now shush, it's starting."
He smiled at the admiring look in his girlfriend's eyes as she watched her favorite classic star. That was the real reason he loved watching old movies with her. Yes, obviously there was the cuddling involved when a couple watched a movie together. But then there was also the spark she got in her eyes watching classic movies. It was almost as bright as when she was working on her music but it still sent his heart racing.
He tightened his grip on her slightly and saw her smile brighten just a bit. She was still the black-and-white film star he had met in that music classroom. Maybe there was more to look at and more to care about now. But he still saw that beautiful silver screen girl born in the wrong era that he fell for.
The girl he didn't want to lose now or ever again.
