Shawn smiled when he saw Maria. She was in a white wrap spaghetti strap crop top and black high waisted jeans. She had changed from her dance shoes into a pair of black strappy heels and her jet-black curls fell over her shoulders with a headband made of white and black feathers. "Do I look okay?" She asked, blushing under Shawn's gaze. Even after 6 years, he could still make her blush like she was 19 again.

He kissed her quickly. "You look absolutely amazing." She smiled and her blush darkened. He smiled, knowing the surprise he had waiting for her.

Alan and Witney stood off to the side, watching the two of them. "Even if she doesn't win, she still comes out on top tonight." Witney commented. "She gets to go home with him." Alan nodded in agreement, happy for his partner.

Shawn and Maria had agreed to perform after the voting had finished and before the winner was announced with 6 of the pros dancing. The costumes were even based off of them. Alan, Gleb, and Sasha all were dressed in black button-ups and black jeans similar to Shawn's typical outfits while Witney, Sharna, and Emma were dressed in black and white lyrical costumes.

They were all broken out of their thoughts when Erin began on stage. "Welcome back to our season finale! The finalists have finished their dances and voting has closed but before we announce who will be taking home that mirrorball trophy, there is one final performance from one of our finalists."

Shawn strapped on his guitar and took Maria's hand, walking her out onto the stage. They took their seats on the stools and stagehands set up Shawn's mic, handing Maria hers. "Singing their hit duet Like To Be You and accompanied by six of our pros, please welcome finalist Maria Peters and Shawn Mendes!" Tom motioned to them.

Shawn began plucking the strings and even 5 years after it had been recorded, Maria still got chills when he began to sing,

Don't cry or do whatever makes you comfortable
I'm tired too, there's nothin' left to say
Let's call a truce, 'cause I don't really wanna go to
Bed like this

Emma and Sasha began the dance alone with Sasha cupping Emma's cheeks in his hands. They did a few graceful steps of a lyrical before separating and each going to one side.

I'm so sorry
That we're still stuck in the middle
I'm so sorry
'Cause in the moment I

Alan and Sharna stepped onto the stage, meeting in the middle and pressing their hands together, reaching up to the sky. Alan twirled her as Maria lifted the mic to her lips and started the chorus with Shawn.

I don't know what it's like to be you
I don't know what it's like but I'm dying to
If I could put myself in your shoes
Then I'd know what it's like to be you

Alan and Sharna flowed into a beautiful lyrical, rushing off one side of the stage at the final line while Gleb and Witney waltzed into their spots

Can I kiss you or not?
'Cause I'm not really sure right now of what you want
Are you still mad at me? I'm hopin' not
'Cause maybe we could go to the movies
I know that always cheers us up, hey

I'm so sorry
That we're still stuck in the middle
Yeah, I'm so sorry
'Cause in the moment I

Witney and Gleb performed a graceful waltz as Shawn joined Maria for the rest of the song.

I don't know what it's like to be you
I don't know what it's like but I'm dying to
If I could put myself in your shoes
Then I'd know what it's like to be you

Gleb performed a swan lift with Witney, keeping her in the air as they rushed off stage and Emma and Sasha once again took their place.

Tell me what's inside of your head
No matter what you say I won't love you less
And I'd be lying if I said that I do
I don't know what it's like to be you
I don't know what it's like to be you

Sasha and Emma performed a dramatic lyrical to Shawn and Maria belting out the bridge of the song and the guitar solo that came after. The camera caught sight of Maria and Shawn keeping their eyes locked on each other as they sang the familiar song.

I get worried
I might lose you a little
Every time we
Every time we argue and get caught up in the moment

Sasha and Emma began a waltz, circling around the stage. As the bridge fell into the chorus, Witney and Gleb and Alan and Sharna joined them, twirling and spinning around the stage in a group waltz.

I don't know what it's like to be you
I don't know what it's like but I'm dying to
If I could put myself in your shoes
Then I'd know what it's like to be you

The three pairs performed specialized dips and lifts in time with each other, earning applause and cheers from the audience watching in rapt attention.

So tell me what's inside of your head
No matter what you say I won't love you less
And I'd be lying if I said that I do
I don't know what it's like to be you
I don't know what it's like to be you
I don't know what it's like

The final note fell from Shawn's guitar and the pros slowly came into their final pose. The audience cheered and applauded as the pros stood up and took a bow, gesturing to Shawn and Maria who stood and took bows as well.

Shawn held a finger to his lips as he took off his guitar, handing it to a stagehand. Maria and the pros alike raised an eyebrow when he took Maria's hand and the mic, leading his girlfriend center stage. "Maria, I've been wanting to do this for a while now and I don't think I could've picked a better time than right now." He said into the mic.

"Shawn, what is going on?" She questioned. "What are you talking about?"

He simply smiled and continued, "Maria, these last 6 years have been the best years of my entire life. And I don't want them to end. I fell for you when I saw you in the music room of my old high school and I still fall for you every day. So, I'm asking, right here and now," He got down on one knee and pulled the ring box from his pocket. Maria let out a gasp and covered her mouth in shock while the audience exploded in applause. The pros and stars alike looked shocked and Maria had tears glittering in her eyes. "Will you marry me?"

Maria let out a sob when he popped open the box. The ring was her in every detail. A silver band held a heart-shaped black diamond outlined with smaller normal diamonds. She smiled and put her hands over her chest as she tried to keep her heart from beating out of her chest. She nodded eagerly, not trusting her voice not to break.

She let out a squeal as confetti exploded from behind them and the words She said yes! were shown on the screen behind them. Shawn laughed and took one of her hands to slip the ring on. He leaned down and pressed his lips to hers as the pros and stars came on stage to congratulate them.

Maria didn't end up winning the mirrorball trophy. She was runner-up but it didn't matter. Like Witney had said, she still came out on top because she got to go home with Shawn and call him her own for the rest of their lives.
