I slipped out of maylins grip, which wasn't very hard to do, and put my shoes back on.
It was already late at night and nobody came looking for her so I didn't bother waking her.
I pulled my black sweatshirt over my head and strode for the door. "Luke?" I heard her sleepy voice call my name out.
"What's wrong Maybear?" I whispered rushing over to her side. "Should I go?" She ignored my question. "Babe it's late and nobody's came looking for you so you can stay if you want." I sat beside her and moved the piece of hair near her eyes behind her ear.
"I'll just stay. Why are you all dressed up?" She yawned laying back down on her side but tilted her head on the pillow to face me.
"I need to make a call, I'll be back soon okay." I gave her a light kiss on her forehead and made my way out.
I had already used my call for the month but I really wanted to talk to Ashton.
He's always been by my side, I think he was one of the first people to notice I was a little different from everyone else but never treated me differently. To this day, he's still my bestfriend.
I snuck down the stairs and through the halls until I got into the phone booth. I dialed his number and waited for him to pick up, and after about three rings, he did.
"Hello?" He asked obviously not knowing who It was since this hospital didn't have caller ID.
"Ash, it's Luke." I sighed and sat in the chair they provided.
"Luke! I thought you could only call me once a month?" He chirped.
He always seemed happy when I called to talk, or atleast he was amazing at pretending to be.
"And you know me well enough to know that I'm not going to listen to that bullshit." I chuckled. "But listen, I need advice." I added.
"What kind of advice?"
"Girl advice. You know how I am, how am i supposed to keep her around?" I questioned.
"Look luke, I don't think you need a girl on your plate right now, I've heard you've been snapping a lot lately." Ashton trailed off.
"I know but this is different. She sat at my table the other day, and I told her to leave before I freaked out, then she snuck up to my room one night, and I didn't kill her, and last night, if her roomate wouldn't have interupted, we would've had sex, and I'm stressed man, it's been awhile you know?" I spilled.
The line was silent for a moment until he spoke up.
"I'm happy for you luke. My advice is to not get too close to her, because you know how close you and I are, and there's been multiple times where you tried to kill me." He chuckled.
"Yeah sorry about that, I'm
getting a little bit better." I mumbled and scratched my neck awkwardly."Tell me about her" He yawned, I assumed he was tired since I did call him at 3am.
"Well her names Maylin, she has long dark brown hair and really pretty hazel eyes. She likes to push my buttons a lot. She has a weird obsession with gummy bears, I usually sneak some for her every other day." I chuckled at how whipped I was by a girl I met six days ago.
"Damn, you got a keeper Luke." I could imagine the smirk on his face.
"Why is she in there?" He asked.
It wasn't my place to tell, but after all, I did call him to talk about her.
"Schizoprenic." I answered bluntly.
"Wow that's gotta be stressful. I know they probably treat you all like shit in there and believe me I'd come get you if I could." He sighed.
This was something he often said, but it gave me a warm feeling knowing that he would pick me up if he could.
"I met someone too. Her names Katherine and she's gorgeous." He added.
"Now it's your turn to spill." I chuckled.
"Well I met her at the tattoo parlor, and she likes to smoke a lot. But she's beautiful, we don't know eachother very well but I'm hoping that'll change." He beamed.
"How's cal and mikey?" I asked. I haven't heard from them in about a month. "Have you ever known them to pick up a girl?" He chuckled. "But they're good. They miss you a lot too." He added.
I felt a smile forming into my face. Those boys are like my brothers, so it brought me joy knowing they still cared about me.
"I should get back to Maylin. But hey good luck with Katherine." I stood up getting ready to set the phone down.
"Same to you, and I hope you have protection, or else you'll be getting a letter full of condoms from me." I could practically imagine his smirk from across the line before he hung up.
I put the phone down and opened the door quietly sneaking down the hall.
"Luke?" A familiar voice called my name. "Maylin?" I questioned. "No you idiot, it's Alaina. But speaking of Maylin, do you have her?" She hissed.
She got on my nerves, a lot. But I can stick this one out I guess.
"Yeah, she's staying the night with me." I scoffed and pushed past her. "Look hemmings, despite the fact that I'm extremely scared of you, Maylin is the only female friend I have in here, so just don't hurt her okay? Or I'll take the risk and attempt to beat your ass." She stepped in front of me.
"Alright I get it Alaina, go to bed or something." I rolled my eyes.
She ran back down to her room and I trotted back up the stairs. As soon as I walked into my room, I expected Maylin to be asleep, but she was awake just staring at the ceiling.
"You know what I want most?" She asked out not directly to me but it was in my best interest to answer.
"Gummy bears?" I chuckled sliding in beside her.
"No Luke." She smacked my shoulder and rolled her eyes.
"I want to be free. From everything. Free of the voices, free of fear, free of this place." She whispered.
"What are you afraid of?"
"Dying." She replied vaguely. "Death?" I furrowed my eyebrows.
"No, everyone dies obviously, I'm just afraid of how I'll die. Like if it's slow and painful and gruesome or quick and painless. Maybe it'll be tomorrow, maybe it'll be In 84 years. You never know when and how it'll happen and that scares me." She turned in her side to face me.
"You know what I'm afraid of?" I wrapped my arm around her waist.
"I'm afraid of losing. Not like losing a game, but people. I don't like to get too attatched to people in general, but if I do, I'm afraid they'll leave me." I sighed.
"It'd be a dream come true to be free from all of that." She mumbled and layed her head on the top of my chest.
