Chapter 1 - Unedited
---------------------------------------------------------------------
"Opal do you want green or blue?" Lucinda asks as she continued to run her fingers through my hair. I ponder for a moment looking at he tightly fitted teal dress hung up on the closet door.
"Blue," I mumble softly. The dorm room felt small and quite cramped as the three of us worked to get ready. Lucinda nods her head as she reaches for the blue seashells sitting on the mantle. My mind drifts to the thought of the ocean crashing against the sand. Wiggling my toes as the reflective polish continues to dry. My heart races as I wait impatiently for her to finish this process of braiding my hair.
"All Done," Lucinda beams as she shows me the finished product. My long white hair was braided beautifully down my back as the blue shells danced trails through the strands of color much brighter against the harsh white then it had been on the table.
"That looks beautiful," Alexa beams as she continues to comb through her very own hair. "You are going to be the prettiest girl there," I couldn't help but feel some resentment in her voice. Maybe I would be, but I didn't mean to do that on purpose. I just wanted to go, to hang out with my friends and to have some fun. I didn't care about the dance. I didn't care about the school. My decision to join was made at such a young age that I wasn't sure any of it really mattered anymore. Maybe I would just disappear.
"Are you guys almost ready?" Alexa questions now that her hair was fully brushed out. She grabs her very own dress off the closet door and holds it close to herself as she looks into the mirror. I nod my head glancing at the fake eyelashes hanging off the end of my eyes. I knew they weren't going to last long. The moisture in the air would affect the glue and probably an hour into the dance they would be sliding down my face.
Lucinda insisted on placing them there though.
"Let's get into our dresses then," Lucinda commonly referred to as Luci smiles grabbing the green dress off the counter. She pulled it off the hanger and begin unzipping the material. Laying it on the bed in front of her she stripped her clothes off before sticking her feet into the dress. I reached for my very own. The tightly fitted blue dress was different than the others. There wasn't as much sparkle, there wasn't as much flare. I wanted more of the mermaid style dress to keep my full motion of movement, while Luci and Alexa went with giant ball gowns. I shook my head realizing that was going to be awful for them in the sand.
"Are you really going to wear that into the water?" I question. Pointing at the two girls who were now in their ball gowns. Both of them paused, their lips parted in protest as they stared at me.
"Yes?" Alexa questions as she holds the seashell mirror up to inspect her makeup.
"What a waste," I mumbled. Rolling my eyes I pulled my very own dress on. I knew our dates would be here soon.
"Blake is going to love your dress," Lucinda beams to Alexa pointing to her skirt as she mentions her boyfriend.
Alexa and Blake had been together for years. They came together when Asada and Olyvya picked them up. Bringing them to the school when it was in its first year. They were some of the older students like myself but they will never understand where it started. How the school had come about.
They didn't have to go to classes in a kitchen, learning things during the day and swimming during the night. They would never understand what we went through. The things I had to do to help get the school to where it was today.
"Blake told me he wanted to make tonight really special," Alexa squeals as she holds her phone close to her chest. I searched my own phone for anything to distract myself. We still had around fifteen minutes before anyone would get here.
"Opal, are you upset we have dates and you don't?" Luci mentions. I shook my head letting out a quick scoff. No, I wasn't upset, all the guys that went to our school was a waste of time and there was no reason for me to waste my time on any of them. I didn't take offense to the way she had asked her question. It was very normal for her to ask things in a rather rude light. She wasn't the smartest when it came to social skills, but I still kept her around.
"No, they are a waste of time," I moaned glancing at my appearance in the mirror. I was somewhat disgusted with how dressed up I was but I couldn't help but get lost in how pretty my hair looked. Now that the dress was wrapped around my skin the whole image had been pulled together. My heart was pounding in my chest. I didn't want to spend a bunch of time with people drinking and acting like idiots. I just wanted to stay home, read a book and dream about the waves. It was a full moon tonight and I felt like things were going to go wrong if we weren't careful.
"What do you mean?" Alexa questions, her face contorted as if I had broken her heart by telling her what a colossal waste of time her boyfriend was. It was true though. I didn't think they would last. I didn't feel she really deserved him. He treated her so well while she drooled over other celebrities.
"Oh it looks like they are here, we better get going," Luci tried to save the conversation, doing the best she could to pull us away before Alexa started crying. She was easily offended. I didn't know why she hung out with me.
I was a loner.
"Finally," Alexa pops off as the two girls hop down the stairs towards their dates. My heart was pounding even faster now. My mind racing, trying to think of any excuse I could use to get out of here tonight. Nothing was going to work though.
"Opal, are you coming?" The girls shout from down the stairs. I nod my head taking another look at myself in the mirror.
"Yes!" I shouted back taking in every little detail before I wandered into the dangers of a full moon night. Hoping that I would come back alright.
