We did our best to get the rest of everything cleaned up as quickly as possible. The idea of getting to head to the beach and work on some magic was exhilarating. My heart bouncing with joy as I rushed to get everything done. We would have to stop at the dorms before heading out to grab a jacket but soon enough I would be with my one true love...the ocean.
Damien would sneak looks at me every so often, getting more often as the evening went on. We wiped the tables down and did everything we needed to so the kitchen would be ready for breakfast. My fingers were shaking with excitement and Damien and I rushed towards the ocean.
The night sky taking over as it engulfed us in its chilly embrace. A large smile was forming on my face as the soothing sounds of the waves crash against the shore. I didn't want to be anywhere other than here.
"What a beautiful night," I smile, not realizing I had said it out loud. Damien chuckled, his eyes watching me as I stare up at the sky.
"I wouldn't know," I turned to look at him. Slightly annoyed I had to pull my attention away from the stars to do it.
"What?" The word fell out of my mouth before I could even process what was happening. I shook my head feeling like an idiot before turning back to look at the sky. The stars flooded the blanket of black, the moon shining so brightly it was nearly blinding.
"I haven't taken my eyes off of you," Damien whispers taking a few steps closer to me as he spoke. My heart leaps in my chest as I was yet again pulling my gaze away from the sky. He held a toothy grin on his face, his eyes filled with light as he looks at me.
My heart was racing in my chest. No one has ever been so sweet to me and unfortunately if he didn't compromise here I was going to throw it all away.
"You're a dork," I smiled, leaning towards him letting my body crash into his. His hot skin felt good against my cool exterior. My heart racing in my chest as I allowed him to wrap his arms around me. I could feel the heat in my face and it was driving me crazy. No one has ever been able to do this too me and the more time I spent with him the worst it got.
"I think I'm going to put in a request to travel," I mumbled not sure why the words had come out of my mouth. Maybe my brain was questioning itself. Hoping he would figure out his powers, so he could come with me. Mermaids that didn't have control were dangerous, and while I was here that was exciting, but under the sea I wasn't willing to risk it.
"Oh yeah, and where are you going to go?" He was gentle as he spoke, his mind taking in every word I was saying to him. I couldn't help by smile, my body so confused on what emotion it should feel. I was happy he was being so supportive, but at the same time it was nerve wrecking realizing I shouldn't have mentioned it to him. We needed to focus on his powers.
"I think I'm going to go find my mother, or at least try," I muttered. I was using the same excuse I was planning on telling Sammy tomorrow when I asked for my slip.
My body trembled at the thought of having to go into the office and ask for permission to leave. Something inside me told me they were going to deny it since I didn't have my necklace anymore. Hopefully Asada wouldn't be the one in the office, Sammy usually was the one who took care of this stuff but if Asada was around she would take control.
"Are you sure you don't need someone to come with you?" I shook my head. I hadn't planned on telling anyone else about it. Damien shouldn't even know in the first place.
"No, I think this is something I need to do on my own," I whispered, praying that it didn't' have to turn out that way. The closer I got to leaving, to putting my plan in action, the more terrified I got at the thought of leaving.
"Are you sure!" He pressed the issue a little more. My heart thanked him for that, but my brain told me I needed to hold my ground. I nodded my head.
"Yes, I am sure, now we need to get to work on trying to figure out your powers," He must have given up, his shoulders slouching, his arms hanging as if there wasn't an ounce of energy to hold them up anymore.
"Fine," He mumbled.
I wasn't sure how long we were on the beach. The moon traveled across the sky as Damien and I worked on different skills, searching different routes of magic, doing whatever we could to find his powers.
Hours had passed and there was no luck. Nothing but a simple spark of what seemed like it could have been a power that just wasn't fully developed.
"How is this possible?" I kicked at the sand, pacing back and forth as the confusion continued to take over my mind. We had tried everything and nothing seemed to work.
"I just don't have powers, that's why I didn't want you to worry about it..." Damien confessed, my heart dropped as I turned to look at him. The desperation in his voice did nothing but anger me. Why would he have lied to me about something like that. If I'd known he'd put in so much effort to find his powers this whole thing would have taken less time, but yet, here we were wasting time.
"What? You told me your pod doesn't care about powers, they don't test for them, or try to discover them, that they just allow them to come naturally, so you lied to me?" I question, the words spilling out of my mouth like word vomit.
"Kind of,"
