Chapter 2 - Unedited

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The dance was decorated beautifully. There were lights strung from poles that were planted in the sand. There was only about a hundred people here. This didn't shock me as this was the population of the school, so all in all this was a decent turnout. I wandered through the crowd allowing Alexa and Lucinda to run off and do whatever they wanted to do with whomever they chose.

I was searching for someone, something that would help me make it through the night. I really just needed to find one of the mentors. Rolling my eyes I let out another scoff. I hated calling them that. They were my friends, they took me in when I had nowhere to go. I didn't want to refer to them as if they were just a mentor. It made me feel like I was using them for my own gain. They saved me, they used me for their gain and without the three of us they used that night, none of this would have been a thing.

This school would be nothing. These people would all be on the streets somewhere, begging for food, drinking just to survive. Yet here they were, acting like they were in high school. At the senior ball, waiting for the king and queen to be crowned.

I found it difficult to stick around. To hang out with everyone that felt like this was important. Did no one here realize that we had a chance to start a new life? Here we were just partying like we were normal teenagers. I wasn't a normal teenager though. I was a young seventeen-year-old girl who had a chance to be a part of something that no one else could ever say they were.

I helped start a school. Five years ago I was a small child, a young girl who was giving up any sense of a normal life. I was allowing them to give me something every other person here takes for granted. I was so fed up with being around those who felt like having a fin wasn't valuable. My mind wandered as I continued to search for any reasonable adult. Somebody who had to fight for what the school was today.

I found Sammy first, my heart collapsing as I see the short red hair falling just shy of her shoulder. I still wish she wouldn't have cut it.

She held a small child as she bounced the little girl on her hip. The little girl had bright blue eyes to match her father, her hair cascading in small curls around her head... a beautiful red to match her mother.

"Opal, how are you doing?" Sammy smiles, her personality hadn't changed over the years. She was still as playful as the day I met her, this made her one of my favorites, but since her and Hudson got married there had been less time for the school from either of them. They still taught their classes, but they had other things to do.

I shook my head trying my best to fake a smile.

"Where is your dad?" I look at the little girl holding her small hand in mine. She giggled before hiding her face in Sammy's shirt. I rolled my eyes. children were ridiculous.

"Hudson is helping Gage bring in a few more items from the offices," She pointed towards the sheds that had been built outside of Gage's house. I looked up at the mansion remembering the days we used to have classes there. When the days mattered.

"Cool," I muttered, not really sure how to respond. My eyes catch the two men as they walk down the sand carrying a large barrel for the fire-pit. Usually, things were fully set up by now, but for some reason, they were behind schedule.

"Opal, are you okay?" Sammy places her hand on my shoulder pulling me from my thoughts. I looked through the crowd once more, seeing all the faces of everyone I spent every single day with. I nodded my head turning to look at her. Yet again cursing her mentally for cutting her long beautiful hair.

"Yes, I'm sorry I have a headache, I'm just ready for our night swim tonight," I did my best to put another smile on my face, hopefully, she would believe this one. She nods her head as the little girl in her arms starts screaming. I wince wishing she would stop. Sammy tries her best to take care of the situation before eventually excusing herself to take care of her child.

I watched carefully through the crowd. Olyvya runs up to Gage and Hudson to help them carry the pit the rest of the way. Olyvya and Gage had married around three years ago, but they haven't yet been lucky enough to have a child. My heart started to ache at the thought of everyone else having someone. Maybe I was a little bitter about not having a date, but no one has seemed important enough to really earn my affection.

Olyvya and Gage shared an embrace before returning to the crowd. Students surrounded them as they answered questions, laughing, talking, and enjoying themselves. Why couldn't I be a part of that? I could bring myself to add myself to the group.

People seemed to annoy me, they seemed to not give me the credit that I felt I deserved. I had the powers, I had the brains, and I had the skills. I ranked the highest in all of my classes but nobody seemed to want to notice. The crowd seemed to continue on as if there was nothing wrong. Nothing was going on, students were kissing, drinking, acting like regular teenagers. This disgusted me.

"Man, you've got a weird hair color," I shook my head pulling a strand away from my face as I turned to look at the boy standing next to me. He had come out of nowhere. I'd never seen him before, his eyes bright as he stares directly at me.

"Hi," He mutters, sticking his hand out to shake mine.
