Chapter 6 - Unedited

---------------------------------------------------------------------

When I woke up my head was pounding. My body was covered in sweat. My hair still in, what was now a messy braid as the shells clung for dear life. The room felt heavy like the walls were going to come crashing down on me. I wasn't sure what had happened last night or why I felt like this. My mind racing as I tried my hardest to pull myself from the sheets. Shaking my head I was finally able to manage enough strength so that I was sitting upright.

"What the hell is going on?" I growled. Placing my hand on my forehead to soften some of the pounding sensations. It didn't work. Pulling my phone off the dresser beside my bed I searched it for an answer I could find. Anything that would tell me what had happened the night before. There weren't any photos, no texts that I didn't know about, I hadn't made any phone calls, so everything that had happened must have happened under the water. But then why was I home? Shouldn't I be safe and sound sleeping in the coral reef?

I pulled the sheets away from my body as I decided I needed to take a shower. Something to wash this pain away before I had to head to school. Glancing at the clock I realized I only had a little over an hour and a half to get ready, which meant I would need to hurry.

My feet hit the cold wooden floor as I grab my towels and head towards the showers. Mentally my mind was cursing my body for taking each and every step. Wishing that I had stayed back in the warmth and comfort of my very own bed. Letting out a snarl when I entered the bathroom I realized there were a few other girls in there whispering about probably some gossip that didn't matter.

They froze when I walked in, dropping their toothbrush on the sink as the younger of the two stares at me. I roll my eyes, trying my best to ignore them since I really couldn't put up with this right now. Hopping into the shower I grabbed for my necklace, a habit I had since I'd been turned into a mermaid five years ago.

My hand grasps for the necklace but seems to come out empty handed.

My eyes fall to my chest searching for the unique piece of jewelry that would keep me from transforming in the human world. I didn't have to worry about transforming in this building as everyone here had the same problem and would understand. But for some reason, my necklace was missing and I would need to find it fast.

The girls continue to watch me carefully as I rush out of the bathroom, shooting them a glare before heading into the hallway. I rushed all the way back to my room, being careful to not drop my towel. Mentally cursing myself for not wearing my clothes on my journey. Mermaids were used to seeing each other naked so it wasn't like it was a huge deal.

I burst through the door to my room looking everywhere I could think of to find my necklace. It wasn't in my pockets from last night, the bag I had taken to keep all of my stuff nice while we were swimming. I pat my head hoping to remember where I had gone after the swim but I just couldn't.

Everything after the kiss was a blur...

My heart sank in my chest, the answer to what happened after the kiss was held by the one person I didn't know how to find. The one person I had no clue where to even start looking for.

"Shit!" I shouted to myself as I quickly get dressed for school, cleaning the shells out of my hair the best I could. I wipe the old makeup off the bottom of my eyes and touch up the pretty blue eyeshadow that was plastered across my lids. This was way more than I normally wear but it would have to do for today. I was running out of time and needed to get on my way. Tonight I would have to figure out how to find my necklace.

My heart started racing quickly as I realize the shirt I was wearing was low cut. Everyone would be able to see my necklace was missing! I mentally smacked myself for being so stupid. If you lose your necklace you get in serious trouble. If a fisherman or something were to find the necklaces they would have a key to our world and that would be very dangerous. They had given us all necklaces to help us in our own lives and here I was acting like an idiot. I should have been more protective of it.

I quickly switched into a turtleneck. Hopefully, no one would notice the unusual piece of clothing. Shaking my head I grabbed the school bag hanging on the chair and begin my journey towards the school building. It wasn't a long walk. It was actually much nicer than it used to be. School and housing used to both run in Gage's house. If his parents returned for a couple of days we would all have to hide. We would run to the sea, but luckily they were too busy traveling to other countries to have a care in the world about their son.

I hated that feeling. It matched mine all too much. I remembered being such a young girl, living on the streets while my parents had money, they thought I was a freak because my hair was unusually white, the only thing that made me special and they tossed me out into the cold.

I tried to bring my thoughts back to finding my necklace... and Damien when I walk into the school building. Students chatter on about the events of yesterday, whispering to their friends or cackling to some joke that had been said. I rolled my eyes feeling like everyone was staring right at me.

I needed to get to class.
