Chapter 20 - Shallows

I didn't react for a couple of seconds, not able to digest the information.

"Huh?" I asked dumbly. I shook my head at myself and cleared my throat. "Sean, calm down. Sean? Sean!" I said, my voice rising in an effort to calm the panicking guy on the other end of  the phone.

Silence. "Why would she say no? She said no, Skyler. She doesn't want to be with me." I heard Sean 's voice lower to an emotionless drone.

"Can you describe what exactly happened, please?" I asked, trying to keeping my own shock at bay.

"Everything was going perfectly. She looked amazing, we had an amazing dinner, had a lot of fun, chatted... everything was completely normal. She was so happy. The fireworks started and she looked absolutely breathtaking with the colours reflecting in her eyes and that beautiful smile on her face. I knew it was time. So I got down on one knee and..." He paused.

I waited for him to continue.

"I should have known it the moment I saw the expression on her face. She was shocked and her eyes were filling with tears. At first I thought it was out of sadness but then I dismissed the thought, thinking they had to be tears of happiness. I told her how much I loved her... how she meant the world and more to me... how I so wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. She just stared at me, the tears rolling down her face, her expression filled with something... something I couldn't understand. And then I asked her if she would marry me. She stared at me for a couple of seconds and then, then she said no and went back into the hotel."

My mouth fell open at the brutality of it all. Sean must be heartbroken.

"I am standing outside the hotel. I don't know what to do. What do I do?" He asked and I was shocked to hear the coldness and lack of emotion in his voice.

I don't know.

"I will tell you exactly what you are supposed to do now." I said firmly. "But you are going to have to promise me that you will do exactly that."

"Okay." He said, sounding incredibly weak.

"Take a walk for 15 minutes and calm yourself down. Don't do anything stupid. Just calm yourself. Both of you need some space. . I am sure Eliza is upset right now but you are going to go to the room. If she is still there, don't talk to her unless she wants to talk to you. Give her space. Don't... don't be the first to start conversation. I have feeling that won't be the best thing to do right now." I hesitated. "Hopefully you guys will talk in the morning."

"Do you really think so?" He asked, his voice quiet.

"Yes. I really do think so."

"I wonder what I did to make her unlove me." He whispered, sounding pained. He cut the call just after that.

I pulled my phone away from my ears. I wanted to call Eliza so badly and I stared at her contact photo on my phone, my finger hovering above the call icon.

Don't be a hypocrite. Give them space.

I switched off my phone and started running towards the palace.

Running is so liberating. It really does make you forget everything. I could feel the cold wind sting my eyes and cheeks. My muscles stretched painfully as I sprinted, the lights growing bigger as I closed in on the palace. I stopped in front of a back door and went inside, warmth instantly flooding me.
