I stared up at the twenty-seven glow in the dark stars taped to the ceiling. I counted them ten times: there were seven blues, five pinks, ten greens and five reds. I must have received a defective pack because the color variations and odd numbers were really throwing me through a loop. I guess now I knew how everyone in the world felt about me.
"Do you not have anything better to do?"
My head hung off the back of the rolling chair as my eyes averted to my father, filling the doorway with his presence. He was tall, muscular and his voice could shake a mountain alone; his head was touching the top of the door frame. If he had hair, there would be no room for it. He held an intimidating presence with his broad shoulders and constant frown that splattered on his face. His blue eyes were the only window to how he truly felt, but no one knew how to read him with the exception of me and my late mother.
I sat up rolling my neck until a crack released the tension. "I am counting the different variations of colors and numbers which are close to dying of boredom. That doesn't sound important enough for you?" I crossed my legs facing him with a smile.
He rolled his eyes. "No, it sounds like a lot of dramatic statements that you believe to be funny. Why don't you go outside and hang out with your friends?"
Silence fell between us, as he quickly realized his mistake. He cleared his throat and shifted uncomfortably under my glaring eyes. He rubbed his neck uncomfortably trying to think of anything to get foot out of his mouth, but nothing came.
Who would want to be friends with a girl with psychotic tendencies? Not one fucking person.
Take your chance now. My wolf stirred within me.
I glanced at the red envelope in his hand; it was freshly stamped with our pack's emblem of a moon crescent. He would need someone to deliver the letter. Who better than the daughter of the Alpha with psychotic tendencies? It can be put to good use.
"Dad. Since I have no friends, I have all the free time in the world to make myself useful and take care of that delivery for you." I smiled, reaching for my ticket out of this prison and prayed to the Moon Goddess that he would take the bait.
He grunted disapprovingly. "You are not allowed off the grounds because of the stir you caused within our pack. If you can't get along with members of our pack, please tell me how you can survive the neighboring packs?"
"Dad, I got into one little tiff-"
He scoffed, interrupting me. "Four fights. One of the fights dislocated my best fighter's shoulders!"
"When are you going to let that one go! I was thirteen, if a little girl took him down that easily then was he really your best?"
"No." He said proudly. "You are my best. My secret weapon." He sighed before exiting the room. "Come."
I followed him into his office. It always smelled like sandalwood and burnt turkey. He spent most of his time in this office after my mother had passed. I suppose the bed was too cold, too big without her. He had a couch in the corner where he spent his nights. It seemed convenient enough to walk ten feet and start your pack duties of the day. He marched over to his desk, reaching in the middle compartment he pulled out a small metal box.
"Very well, but if you are going, I have conditions."
I saluted him cheerfully. "I would expect nothing more than a list of Nos before heading off for my journey across the land."
He ignored me and opened the metal box. He took out six white pills carved with our pack emblem, a bear and outreached his hand. He gave me one and placed the reminder of the pills in a small plastic bag already on his desk, it smelled of spicy jerky like I would want that flavor in my mouth. "Take your medicine before you leave. I do not want any...episodes on your way there or on his territory."
