It was near dawn when I stirred awake hearing the footsteps of an anxious Alpha move swiftly across the floor. We slept in the corridor, too tired to make it up the stairs.

Another mate? She is insane if she thinks...

My body ached and cracked when I breathed, reaching my arms to the ceiling. Angry sex was hot and passionate but it cost me movement in my legs and neck. Sebastian was feeling understandably possessive as he refreshed his mark. It wasn't as painful or impactful as the first time, but I felt it was more of a statement piece.

I sat up, covering myself with his buttoned up. I went into the kitchen, seeing pots and pans covering the counter, ingredients of: eggs, flour, seasoning, baking soda laid out as the refrigerator gaped open. Sebastian gripped the edges of the running sink so hard, I thought it would break.

I stood behind him, resting my forehead against his back. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have tricked you. I didn't think-"

"You never do, Sapphire." He turned to glower at me.

I backed up resting my back against the stove, giving him space. "If I am half vampire, half wolf then it would make sense for you to be Zari's mate. Wolves mate for life. I was hoping being intimate would give you guys a push."

"You of all people should know there are steps before being intimate. Trust, love, connection. All things we had to work on together. Zari and I lack all of the above. I am not her mate. I will not have another man claim you as theirs!"

"It...it won't be me." I reasoned, my voice low. "She deserves to be happy."

"Fuck her happiness! Listen to me, both of you, I will kill any being who claims rights to you."

"Sebastian, be reasonable. If you push Zari, she will push back ten times harder."

"I don't care. I tried to have empathy, be reasonable. I offered friendship and she challenged me because she felt rejected."

"Yeah, I saw how you handled the challenge when you raised your hand to hit me."

He rolled his eyes. "But it wasn't you, was it."

"It's my body, asshole! You are so stupid! Zari wants you to make a mistake, she wants to tear down all the progress we have made, don't make it so easy for her."

"Then, take the serum. You don't need her."

I glared at him. "There you go, idiot, making it easy. I can't believe you would ask that of me."

"Why is that an unbelievable request if she is actively trying to tear us apart?"

"Because it means you don't have faith in me and before you there was just us. She saved my life and we swore to never let a man come between us. I will not break that promise, not even for you."

I walked away from him, as someone knocked on the door. I opened it seeing a blood covered Nick. He was grinning from ear to ear as I gestured for him to come in. "Since when do you knock?"

"I sensed tensions were high and heard yelling. I figure it was a better option than stepping into your shit." He chuckled, looking into the kitchen. "Anxious cooking again? Never gets old."

"I'm going to put some clothes on." I mumbled, leaving them to their brotherly chat.

"Wear the robes." Sebastian called out, then added. "Please."

"Oh, he said please. I know where you are sleeping tonight." Nick chuckled.

I continued up the stairs, sliding my fingers up the familiar wooden banister. I remembered a time when I would have done anything to go home, no matter how I felt about White Bear or my father. Now, the smell of pine and syrup with a hint of vanilla that filled these halls showered me with a calmness of home.
