kevin.
I LIKE YOU.
All I have to do is say those three words. So why is it so hard for it to come out?
I look at him from across the carriage. He deserves the perfect confession, and of course my dumbass can't find the words to say it.
"This has been fun," Edd tells me. He looks into my eyes and offered a smile before looking away. "It's been... years since I've done something like this."
"I can't get enough of these," I say. Glancing at him out of the corner of my eye creates butterflies in my stomach. I'm nervous for some reason.
Edd hums. "To be so high up in the sky right now... it makes me feel like I'm on top of the world."
"Yeah," I laugh. "Yeah, me too."
He is amazing. Absolutely amazing. I've never heard anyone say things like that, except for in cliche romance movies. I used to roll my eyes, but now I'm swooning.
The ferris wheel turns one last time, stopping with our carriage on the side. We both looked down upon the fair, watching all the people.
"I wish we could have stopped higher," I say, desperate. If nothing else, we must stop at the top. That's the only thing I know for sure.
Edd shifts in his seat. He surprises me when his voice cuts through the air—it's surprisingly quiet up here. "I feel like nothing when I sit up here," he says quietly.
I don't say anything back for a while. I don't know what to say to that. Maybe it was the kind of thing that doesn't need a response.
The wheel goes around again, and again, and again before we stop. The guy running the machine looks at us.
"Time's up boys," he says, opening the door.
"We didn't even stop at the top," I tell him.
He shrugs, and tells us to get off, so I give him three dollars. "This should be good for another time, right?"
"Yeah, okay, you get one more round and then you gotta get off," he tells us. "This line's huge."
When the guy sends us up again, Edd asks me why I like going to the top so much.
"It's really beautiful," I smile. "It's my favorite part of the ride."
As the wheel spins, we talk about a lot of things like school and Chris and flowers. I love hearing him talk about flowers so much. He lights up instantly and explains the complexity of plants and how they can feel things.
"Many trees, like willow trees, for example, can talk to each other. I know that sounds like nonsense but it's not, I assure you! I read that if one tree is attacked, it will let out some kind of alert to tell other trees that danger is coming. Isn't it interesting? How beings can talk without speaking? How foliage can warn without moving?"
"Yes, it's amazing."
Then he goes on about more things--the most wonderfull and interesting things. Biology, chemistry, botany; everything he says goes over my head but still, I couldn't get enough of it. I could listen to him all day, silently admiring his intelligence.
After a while, he stops suddenly. "Am I boring you?"
"Why would you say that?" I ask.
I notice him take his wrist in his other hand. "You haven't said anything, I hope I'm not talking too much..."
"No! No, Edd, I'm just amazed. I love hearing you talk about stuff you like."
Edd smiles and looks out over the fair. "Thank you," he says quietly.
