Chapter 11
I fling the door open and rush up the stairs into the tiny bakery. There’s nobody except for an elderly woman behind the counter.
“Did by any chance a teenage boy come in here?” I ask. She looks up at me. “He’s about this tall and he has curly hair.” The woman just stares.
“You’re the girl.” She says raspily. She bends down and starts to rummage through a drawer in the counter. She pulls out a piece of paper. On the top written in Harry’s handwriting is a message.
Callie
If you’re not too mad at me please come visit. Follow the green trail markers in the woods behind this place. I have a lot to say and I need to do it privately.
Harry
There’s no doubt in my mind about not going. Of course I’m going. I head out the back door into the woods and do as the note says. I pass trail marker after trail marker.
“Harry?” I call as I reach the last bend. Nobody’s there. Maybe he wrote down the wrong thing. I turn around as I hear movement in the bushes. I whip around. Harry suprises me. He’s not… him. His hair is straight and lays in sheets well past his ears. His pants have lost their usual sag and his buttoned up plaid shirt is tucked in. “Harry, what did you do?” I ask him.
“I’m not me without you.” He tells me staring at the ground. I start to smile and then stop myself. I can’t help but run up to hug him. He wraps his arms around me and I breath in his familiar scent. “I’ll never do it again Callie. I promise. I made a huge mistake. It will be easier now though, without all of the distractions.” He tells me.
“What distractions?” I ask him.
“One Direction. I quit this morning.” He tells me. I pull away from the hug.
“You can’t do that Harry.” I tell him. “Not for me.”
“But Cal,”
“Harry, I know you messed up. I’ll give you another chance anyway!” I tell him.
“It’s too late. But thank you Callie. I won’t mess it up this time. The deal has been made. I’m moving back to Cheshire for now and in the Fall I’m coming to college in Colorado. We can see each other all the time!” He tells me. “Just wait, Cal. It will be great.”
“No Harry it won’t! One Direction needs you!” I tell him.
“They’re great lads, and this will give Niall and Lou more solos.” Harry tells me.
“You’re too sweet. But this isn’t worth it. We’re going back and you’re asking for your job back.” I tell him reaching into his pocket for his cell phone.
“Hey Simon, this is Callie Edwards. I’m calling for Harry. He was being quite stupid earlier, and he’s really upset now. Just calling to confirm his spot in One Direction.” I say into the speaker.
“Harry broke our deal.” Simon tells me.
“Yeah I know and he’s like, really sorry. So if you could just send over the schedule that would be great.” I say.
“I can’t do that.” Simon says.
“Okay well, I’m sure Liam has an extra, you know Liam.” I say starting to get worried.
“I do know Liam.” Simon sounds stern. “But Harry Styles is no longer a member of trademark One Direction.” He hangs up the phone.
“Harry.” I tell him as he stares up at me, worry all over his face. “You’ve been fired.”
