"Here dey come," Racetrack shouts to Jack, Katherine, and the rest of the group. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) The boys pour in. Spot comes down and spit shakes with Jack. Katherine stands by watching the action. Jack looks so handsome tossing paper stacks up to the other Newsies as if he does it every day. His green eyes flash with something that she's never seen before. She helped them get this far. Without her, they would not be about to win the strike. Jack has betrayed them once, will help them, and then leave them. Something in the back of mind tells her she should give up before he breaks her by leaving her. She mentally scolds herself. He's still here and she should enjoy the time she gets to spend with him. Suddenly, he's walking over to her.
"You've got a very important man ta see," Jack says and she places a hand on his chest. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies)
"Keep your fingers crossed," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Katherine replies cheerily and starts to leave, but he grabs her wrist. Her hand is still on his chest and a huge grin threatens to erupt on her face.
"For us too," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) He says as he holds there. He lets go and she runs off. Hurrying to see the man who can save her. The boys hurry with packing the papers and getting ready to go out to do what they do best. Jack watches her leave. Why does she make him feel this way? He can't stop looking at her as she leaves. Suddenly, a feeling dawns on him. His dream doesn't seem as exciting or big as he has hoped. In fact, his dream may have just run out the door. He tries to brush this strange haunting thought aside, but it can't be avoided. So, Jack focuses on encouraging his boys as they all raise their papers in the air and slam them down. Everyone is running around yelling and singing. A few moments later, the boys run out of the building and start talking to kids on the street. Jack is handing out papers right and left as the day begins to break. Kids all over the city read the papers and all Jack can do is gather the boys for the final showdown.
"Alright, fellas, here's what we'se gonna do," Jack says as he gathers the boys on the steps of the lodging house, "Me, Spot, and Davey are gonna going into da office and chat wid Pulitzer. Da rest of ya, surround da building. Don't let da bulls stop ya." The boys nod in agreement and understanding. "Alright, let's go." Jack removes his hat and runs his fingers through it. David puts a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"We can do this, Jack. I have full confidence in everyone involved," Davy says encouragingly. Jack nods and places his hat over his dark hair. "But, I have one question, who's Ace?" Jack smiles and shakes his head,
"You'll find out who Ace is," He responds with a smirk and David frowns at Jack's failed attempt to satisfy him. The two hurry towards Joseph Pulitzer's office. As soon as they arrive, Jack barges in, not bothering to listen to the man named Bunsesn who is sitting at the front desk.
"You can't go in there! Mr. Pulitzer is very busy and does not have time to deal with you!" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Bunsen yells angrily as he follows Jack up the stairs to Pulitzer's office. Jack reaches the office and barges in through the door. "You can't just barge in," Bunsen continues, but Jack Kelly, being the impossible boy that Ace thinks he is, does not stop.
"Mornin, gents!" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack says enthusiastically and slaps the paper for the Children's Crusade down on his desk. David and Spot follow shortly after once they see this happen. Jack plops down in one of the large red, tall backed chairs and swings his legs over one of the arms. He cockily adjusts his newsboy cap as he watches Pulitzer's reaction. Jack knew that they had the newspaperman tycoon cornered and he was not too nervous at this point. Pulitzer glares at him and snarls,
"You're behind this!" (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack just smiles innocently and shrugs his shoulders with pleasure. Santa Fe has completely escaped his mind and for now he's satisfied with showing the most powerful man in all of New York City whose boss. He wants to do this for Katherine too. Jack needs to fight for her and the boys. "We had a deal you know," Pulitzer threatens darkly.
"And it came wid a money back guarantee," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack retorts playfully tossing the thick stack of bills onto Pulitzer's desk, "Tanks so much for teaching me bout da power of da press."
"Hm," Seitz says surprised, "These kids put out a pretty good paper." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) The shocked look on Pulitzer's face made Jack smirk. Pulitzer snapped the paper in the air as he snatched it from Seitz's hand. After a short examination, he proclaims,
"No doubt written by my daughter." (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack nearly laughs at the slightly flustered look on his face. To have his own employees betray him was one thing but his own daughter. This was something he had to listen to.
"Ya know, if I were you, I would sign her up befoah someone else takes her," (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack says smirking and Pulitzer slams his fist down on his table in defeat. Just talking about Katherine has made Jack smile. However his smile only makes Pulitzer angrier.
"I had a printing ban issued on every press in the city. Who defied it?" Pulitzer snarls. (Dialogue by Harvey Fierstein in Newsies) Jack is struggling not to laugh at the newspaper tycoon's angry outburst. Katherine would have been proud to see this. Speaking of her, he hopes she is finding who they need to make Pulitzer end this madness.
AN:/ I think we have 3 chapters after this one! Thank you so much for reading it. I know you all are thinking that the strike is ending right about now, but I have a few tricks up my sleeve yet. About 3 chapters worth of tricks up my sleeve. This one did not have any original me scenes in it, so it probably was not that exciting to read. Oh well. You should have a ton of me scenes in these next few chapters that wrap up the book. I can't believe that in 3 weeks I'm going to complete my first book!! So exciting!!!! And we all know what comes after this book...;) If you don't, go check out my message board. Anyways, what did you guys think of this one? Like I said before, there isn't really anything in original in this one. I hope you enjoyed it anyways. I wrote this awhile ago and it was not originally meant to be chaptered, so that's why some of these chapters have been so crazy short. But, I hope it is still good. I have the day off of school today, so you will probably get at least a new oneshot. I am still taking request/OC entries if you want to add your OC to the book. If you have a oneshot in the book, you are considered to be in the book and unless you say otherwise, I will use your OC regularly in the oneshot book as one of the group. Thank you to those who have submitted a form and allowed me to put your character in the book!!!! I have enjoyed getting to do that. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this chapter. Please comment and tell me your thoughts on it. Thanks for reading and see you around, friends!!
