Kenya's point of view
——————————————
As I pulled away from our inadvertent kiss, I knew the moment would be indelible to me, just like my kiss with Cynthia.I couldn't comprehend whether I was kissing him to convince myself I didn't like Cynthia or because I actually liked him, either way, this was my second kiss, it will always significant to me.
"Go shower" he said as he tucked a stray strand of my thick black hair behind my ear.
Did he think I smelled funny?
How rude of him to think that of me.
"Is that an insult" I whisper back to him playfully, our faces still close.
I stare into his face and I can only think "he is so perfectly sublime in his own way"
"Go shower" He says again smiling as he walks away from me, towards his bag.
I quickly speed walk to my pink jansport backpack, the vivid colors of the bag made it easier to spot and distinguish from any other kind of fabric.
I quickly grab it and dig through the pile of clothes sitting inside.
I grab a pink shirt and some blue jeans, along with undergarments.
I speed walk over to the bathroom.
I enter the bathroom and can't help but notice how impure the bathroom is.
The small room seems like it is from antiquity.
If it was a person, it would be a extremely old, dirty, wise old lady.
All I know is, this bathroom has never been cleaned.
I enter the shower.
The warm water hits my back giving me a sense a relief.
It feels like the water is rinsing off all the pain, all the confusion, and all the stress, giving me a small glimpse of mental clarity.
After that feeling of clarity, I can't help but to feel grateful for what I have in this moment.
Most humans right now, are living in hovels because their houses were stolen, or they are eating food that has been moldering for days just because no one in their family is brave enough to go steal some from the local market.
They know that in a fortnight, they'll be dead, because oxygen will be no more.
But where I'm at, oxygen is more.
Oxygen is fake here, and not as fresh, but it feels great in my lungs, so I'll take it.
I jump out of the shower quickly, the water dripping off my skin. I quickly slip on my clothes and walk out.
I see mark, he's sitting on his bed reading a book called "The Circuit" and I can't help but scoff.
I found that book extremely uninteresting.
Well....
I didn't really read it, I kinda only read the excerpt on the back of the book..
I still think it's boring.
Mark looks up at me
"Whats that look?" He says with a little laugh.
"I think that book sucks" I say to him with a little shrug.
He places the book on the bed and smirks.
He quickly gets up and says "let's go to breakfast".
I follow him out the door, attempting to emulate every step he takes.
We walk all the way to the cafeteria, my feet aching by the time we are there.
I enter one of the various breakfast lines to see a wide variety of foods. All cultures are represented.
They had it all.
After grabbing every piece of food I wanted I quickly made my way to a table with mark.
My tray was beautiful to me.
It had so much food on it.
I like food.
I was eating peacefully and so was Mark when we heard a loud voice echoing all over the cafeteria.
It was the crazy British old lady.
I look around the room in awe, not sure where the sound is coming from.
The voice is saying:
"Hello Roomates. This is Janet, the ruler of our little community we have formed. I wanted to let you know that I am assigning jobs to everyone. The people who do better at their jobs earn more points and will get hotter shower water and better food. They will also be invited to a feast, where the ones who don't do good at their job, are not invited.
You will all get a little ID card, it will keep track of your points. The lunch keeper will scan the card before you grab your food and tell you which line to go to.
Jobs will be posted on the cafeteria door, as well as how to get points for that job.
Remember, only person from each job is invited to the feast so try to earn those points. Come by my office to get your ID card. If you need clarification let me know, I will be in my office. The voice cuts out, and I am very confused.
The concept of jobs has my mind running at 70 miles per hour.
What if Kenya and I have the same job, leaving us adversaries?
I don't want to be adversaries with my best friend.
I begin to speed eat my food.
I wanna know what my job is.
I quickly get up and dunk my tray, leaving mark confused.
I begin to speed walk to the cafeteria door and I can see the white paper.
I look for my last name and I cannot find it.
Oh yeah..
I told them my name was Rose Dominguez.
I look under the D's and see my fake name.
Supply runner..
Sounds easy.I go to the definitions on the next page.
"Supply runner- You go to local stores at least once a day and pick up food and supplies. Drop off what you find in the appropriate place.
Example: Medicine- clinic
Snacks- kitchen.
Always make sure to tell the supervisor of that place what you found and how much you found. 1 item= 1 point.
Your points should be updated weekly. Come to Janet's office to gain a "leave camp" pass."I'm almost relieved.
This is one of the easier jobs.
I quickly go to marks name.
"Chef"
Lucky him.
I then check Octavia's.
"Medical Assistant"
That makes sense. She's young, so they can train her.
I then check Cynthia's.
"Supply runner"
The thought of being adversaries with my closest friend kills me a little bit.
