Addison fell into her bed as her body and mind were at the brink of exhaustion. she closed her eyes and thought about some things she could do for the upcoming summer. she had a list of things she could do, but each of them required friends. social activities. people. and that was something she didn't have.
her family had just moved to California from Brooklyn New York, so she didn't quite know anybody. she met a few people from school, but they were only acquaintances. so most of her summer to do list items weren't going to happen until she decided to talk to people.
she picked up her guitar and strummed a few chords. a beautiful note came through as her fingers gingerly ran across the six strings. she glided her fingers on the neck of the instrument to form new chords, then plucked different strings to put together a song. she hummed softly.
a few words came into her mind as her humming became louder, and she started to sing lyrics. "black birds singing in the dead of night... take these broken wings and learn to fly All your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise..."
she sighed deeply and set her guitar down. "yeah right." she mumbled under her breath. when would she find friends?
when would she find, 'her people?'
she lay back on her bed to think things through. so much was on her mind. her friends back at home, her recent crush from Brooklyn, school, and finding friends here. she was overwhelmed, and not quite in the reality that she was all the way across the country. so she slid her eyelids shut, and let her mind slip into unconsciousness.

"Addison! get out of bed! your brothers are going to be here soon!" her mom called from the hall. Addison opened her eyes, and tried to blink out the drowsiness. she sat up, and looked over at her clock on the nightstand beside her. it read '5:57 pm'. how long had she been asleep? she swung her legs over the end of her bed, and continued to try and shake off her desire to sleep. she stood up, and walked over to her bathroom to check her hair and makeup.
when she approached the mirror, she sighed.
(I look like road kill.) she thought while placing her hand over the handle of a brush and started brushing out her hair. then with a makeup wipe, she removed smudged globs of makeup under and around her eyes. she then put her hand around the handle to the door, and opened it. why was she so tired? her two older brothers from New York were coming to visit for the summer. you'd think she'd be more awake for the occasion.
when she reached the hall, there was a sign up on the wall, and a clean house. she blinked another time still attempting to get the sleep off.
she reached the kitchen and poured herself a glass of water. she gulped down the fluids to help her dehydration. once the water was gone, she sat on the couch.
(don't fall asleep. don't fall asleep.) she kept telling herself. but the couches comfortable cushions beaconed for her to lay back and sleep. she closed her eyes, and the couch embraced her in squishiness.
"Addison!" her mom called once more. Addison's eyes shot open and her adrenalin went up. she clumsily got to her feet.
"sorry! yes! i'm awake!" she called.
a few minutes later the doorbell rang. her sister Maccie ran to the door and opened it.
"Robert and Zack!" she yelled embracing them in a tight hug.
"Maccie!" they both yelled squeezing tight.
mom soon came to the door. she hugged them tightly and asked questions about the flight over. soon Cole came by and gave them secret handshakes and cheesy teenage boy stuff. then Addison came and hugged them. last time she'd seen them was Christmas. since they had already moved out and had lives of their own, it made it harder to see them. but the only thing she would keep bothering Robert about is the fact that he wasn't married yet.
She hugged them tightly.
(summer shouldn't be totally boring when you have wacky older brothers.)
