The silence isn't so bad, til I look at my hands and feel sad, cuz the spaces between my fingers are right where yours fit perfectly.
Liam’s POV
After hanging up with Arianna, I rushed out of the store and felt regret wash over me as I glanced back and caught a glimpse of Danielle’s expression. It was a mixture of bewilderment and hurt. Arianna’s words rang through my head.
“That’s so cool! Like fate. Of course you would end up at the store she’s working at, because fate wants you to be together. It’s perfect! You two are perfect together!”
I know she didn’t mean for it to be cruel, but nevertheless, her words stung. Me and Maddy were perfect together.
I blinked away the tears that were gathering in my eyes and told my driver to drive me to the nearest park. I needed time to be alone.
Alone. The word rang through my head. I really was alone, because no one close to me knew how I felt. They sympathized, they gave advice, they tried to put themselves in my shoes, but it didn’t work, because they didn’t experience anything even close.
We arrived at the park, and as I sat down on the swings, I realized that this was the very park Maddy and I used to go to. I just couldn’t seem to get away from her?
I swore I heard a little quiet chuckle right then, and my head jerked up. No one was near me. Was I going crazy? Maybe it was just the wind. It was pretty windy out.
“Are you trying to get away from me, Liam?” I heard someone whisper. Maddy. No. She was dead. My mind was playing tricks on me. My subconscious was just recreating her voice so I wouldn’t feel so alone.
“I miss you,” her faint voice warmed my cold ear. No, it wasn’t possible. I looked to my side, expecting to see… What was I expecting to see? Maybe a shimmery form, dancing in the light?
But all I saw was the air beside me and the empty swing, moving slightly. Back and forth, back and forth. Because of the wind. Right? I heard the chuckle again and felt the hair on the back of my neck rise. This was scaring me.
Ghosts aren’t real. It’s just a trick of my mind. I wanted to hear Maddy’s voice, so I was hearing it. That was all it was.
I glanced at the sky, the sun was beginning to set and I told Arianna I was coming home soon. But I didn’t feel like facing her. I didn’t feel like facing anyone. I just wanted to be alone. Just for a little while longer.
I pushed my feet off the ground and began to swing higher and higher, smiling as I remembered how Maddy would always ask me to push her until she couldn’t swing any higher.
About after fifteen minutes, I decided Arianna was probably getting worried and I jumped off the swing. I told my driver to just drive me home, and after we got there, I sat in the car for an extra five minutes.
“Sir, are you going to get down?” the driver asked politely, and I nodded and jumped out of the car, the grocery bags in hand.
“Why did you take so long?” Arianna asked as I unlocked my door.
“Why are you in my flat?” I snapped irritably. There was such thing as privacy.
“Sorry,” she looked down at the ground, making me feel slightly guilty. “I was just getting worried.”
“I’m not a little kid, okay? I don’t need you to worry about me, I can take care of myself. Now get out of my flat,” I growled. She simply nodded and went back to Niall’s flat.
I set the bags on the kitchen counter and sat on the sofa, head in my hands. She needed to stop treating me like a little kid. I was almost nineteen, not nine!
Sure I was depressed, and I had a tendency to cut, but that didn’t mean she had the right to worry and act like I was a toddler who need taking care of.
Of course, she had good intentions, but I was getting sick of them. I was getting sick of everyone these days. They couldn’t realize that I just wanted time alone, without their pity and condolences. As if on cue, there was a knock on the door.
“Go away,” I groaned, not wanting to see anyone. It was probably Niall anyways, here to yell at me for making Arianna upset.
“Open the door, please?” I was surprised to hear Zayn’s voice, and hesitantly, I got up and opened the door.
“What do you want?” I grumbled, and casually, Zayn let himself in and plopped down onto the sofa.
“We need to talk.”
Danielle’s POV
After my shift, I got home and put nicer clothes on. Then, I put on a bit of make-up. Emma, one of my good friends, had set me up on a blind movie date. I quickly got myself ready, even though I wasn’t a fan of the idea, I wanted to look good.
I jumped in my car and started it up. The cinemas were about fifteen minutes away. I began to drive, and soon, rain started to fall, obscuring my vision of the road.
I got to the theaters with about five minutes to spare. I bought tickets for me and the bloke who was going to meet me there, and waited. I waited for about fifteen minutes. Nothing. Was he standing me up? Great, just what I needed.
I checked my phone for something from him, as far as I knew he had my number. Maybe he was just running late. Nope. No missed calls or texts. I bit my lip and rushed out of the movie theater. Sure, I had just spent my money on those tickets, but I wasn’t in the mood to watch a movie anymore.
Why did I want to come on this date anyways? It’s not like I wanted to be in a relationship with anyone right now… Besides maybe Liam. Liam. That’s why I came. To get my mind off of him.
In the time that I was in the theaters, the rain had begun to come down harder, and even with the wipers on, it was getting difficult to see outside.
Getting my mind off of Liam obviously didn’t work? Why did I think it would? Even if the lad had shown up, I would probably end up mentally comparing him to Liam without meaning to. Liam was just really… amazing.
But nevertheless, he had an air of seriousness and sadness that he couldn’t hide. It seemed like he was a mystery that someone would have to crack.
What had Arianna said to him at the store that made him so upset? He seemed kind of okay at first, better than normal, and then she said something that just made him go back to being his normal, grave self.
There was something here that I was missing. Something huge.
The light I was standing at turned green and I began to drive. Suddenly, there was a car right in front of me, and I tried to hit the brakes, but it was too late. The car was too close.
My car crashed into another one and I heard a crunching sound and felt the air bag force my body back. Then, everything went black.
