Zayn’s POV

As I came back from the studio, I saw Liam storm out of the elevator and to his room, without Arianna and Louis.

“Liam, are you okay?” I asked, and he turned towards me.

“Leave me alone,” he spat through gritted teeth.

“Let’s talk.”

“No.”

“Liam,” I grabbed his arm as he fumbled with his keys. He turned to me and let out an exasperated sigh, rolling his eyes.

“What?”

“Come on mate, let’s talk about it. You can just let all the anger out and I’ll listen. Please,” I begged. He pursed his lips for a moment and thought about it.

Fine,” he finally consented, and gestured for me to enter his flat. I sat down on his couch and he sat beside me, holding his head in his hands.

“Go ahead,” I prodded him, and he looked up.

“I don’t know, it’s just that Arianna really wants me and Dani together, and so does Louis apparently and they just don’t get that no matter how hard I try, I just can’t move on from Maddy. I really, really loved her, hell I could’ve even imagined us married and with kids in the future,” he let out a deep sigh, and for a couple of seconds, I just sat there in shocked silence.

I realized something. Even though I loved my girlfriend, Perrie, we didn’t have what Liam and Maddy had. They had honest, pure love, and that was pretty hard to find at this age.

They were together for about three years, and in those three years, they never stopped loving each other. They had no doubts about their relationship, not even when Liam went off to the X Factor.

They were separate for so long, yet their love never faded, not even a bit. When Maddy gave Liam the news over the phone that she was going to move to London, closer to him, his entire face lit up.

The pair rarely argued, and if not physically, they were mutually attached at the hip. As cheesy as it sounds, they were like two pieces of a puzzle. They fit together perfectly, and weren’t fully themselves unless they were together.

Liam and Maddy really had something special, something serious. If you had asked anyone who knew Liam and Maddy about their relationship, their response would be something along the lines of: they’re bound to get married one day.

I suddenly understood why Liam couldn’t move on. Maddy’s death was hurting him so much more than I had thought, both mentally and physically.

“Zayn?” Liam asked, snapping me back to reality.

“Sorry,” I muttered. “I don’t blame you for missing her. But I just don’t know what to say. I know you really, truly loved her, I honestly do. But Arianna’s just worried for your health. She has good reason,” I gently told him, not wanting to even slightly provoke him.

Instead of saying anything, Liam just heavily sighed and picked at the ends of the bandage I had placed on his arm before.

“Danielle noticed it today,” Liam whispered suddenly. For a second, I didn’t know what he was referring too, but I soon realized he was talking about his cut.

“Did she ask about it?” I asked. He nodded. “What did you say?”

“I told her I got it from a pillow fight with you lads. But Louis and Arianna were eavesdropping on the entire conversation, and Louis obviously knows it’s not true,” he groaned and ran his hand roughly through his hair.

I wanted to tell him it would be okay, things would get better, but both Liam and I knew that was a lie. So what else could I say? Comforting others and helping them through their problems had always come somewhat naturally for me, but now, I had no idea what to do.

Louis’ POV

As I drove home, I tried to put the pieces together in my mind. Obviously, Liam was lying. He hadn’t had a pillow fight with us any time this past week. But why would he have to lie about a simple cut? It really made me suspicious…

Almost the second I turned the engine of the car off, Liam raced out of the car and into the building. Arianna made a movement to open the passenger side door, but I stopped her.

“What is it, Lou?” she asked in a fake cheery tone.

“What’s up with Liam?”

“What are you talking about?” she innocently shot back.

“Arianna,” I took a deep breath in. “You and I both know that Liam was lying when he said the cut was from a pillow fight. Why would he lie about something so trivial?”

“I don’t know.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’m sure,” she assured me, but I still wasn’t convinced. It had felt like at times Arianna knew something about Liam that the rest of us didn’t. Maybe it was related to the reason behind Liam’s lie.

“Arianna, don’t lie to me,” I turned to her and looked her in the eyes with my piercing blue stare, hoping it would make her break and tell me.

“I’m not,” she gritted her teeth.

“It’s pretty obvious that you know something about Liam that I don’t at least, maybe it’s not related to his cut, but why don’t you just go ahead and tell me what you know about him that we don’t?” I asked impatiently, hoping the sentence didn’t sound too confusing.

“Who told you that?”

“No one had to tell me, I figured it out.”

“It’s nothing, okay?” Arianna sighed, looking somewhat defeated. I pursed my lips, I wanted to question her further, but she just looked so torn up and sad at the moment.

I groaned. “We’ll just talk about this later, okay?” I asked nicely. She eagerly nodded and practically jumped out of her seat. I ran a hand through my hair and followed.

Whatever Liam was keeping from the rest of us, I was going to figure out what it was, soon. Hopefully.
