Katie's POV
I jump into my seat and open up my laptop. I delete a bunch of junk mail while snacking on a granola bar. Boring notifications, sigh.
My eyes land on an email from an anonymous sender which sparks my interest. I click on it, and it opens up to a page of digits and patterns.
To anyone, it looks like someone just smashed their head on a keyboard to type this out. But to Black Light agents? This is the code language that's been drilled into our heads from the moment we were able to walk.
It's from Seth's assistant, Nick. It's asking me for my progress report.
I stretch and crack my knuckles. This is my favourite part of assignments. There's nothing better than doing a progress report and realising how much I've already uncovered about my target.
All right Kate, let's get down to business
... to defeat
... the Huns
Ugh, Kate, focus!
I place my fingers on the keyboard and pause. Progress report... what exactly have I learnt about Shane again? I rack my brains for an answer. Other than he has really amazing cotton candy hair, a heavenly cologne, soft bue eyes and- oh, dammit! I'm getting distracted again!
Ughhhh, I groan internally. I haven't been focusing.
He's just a target. A mission. A man I need to kill. That's all. I'm not supposed to actually be attracted to him. None of this was planned.
Sighing, I push away from my desk. I have nothing to report. I haven't done any snooping or sleuthing or whatever you wanna call it. Basically, I haven't been doing my job.
A knock on my door makes me jump 3 feet into the air. I quickly close the email from Nick and shove my laptop hastily under my bed before opening the door.
It's Jessica.
"Heyyy Girlfriend!" She says, pushing through the door before flopping onto my ready-made bed. I grind my teeth and try not to unleash all hell on her for messing up my beautiful bed.
She continues. "We haven't talked much, how's things going for you? What do you think of hitting the mall this weekend?" She sits up and looks at me with big, earnest eyes. "I saw this really cute violet dress online and need to get it at a cheaper price. Ugh. Can you believe it? $50 for a dress. So unfair!" She pouts and squuezes her eyes shut before throwing her arms up and falling back onto my bed again, messing it up even more.
"Oh, this week? I'm um busy. Yeah. I have a uh study group. Yup, a study group. Can't go out, sorry Jessica." I lie through my teeth and look towards the ground.
What I'm really gonna do, is invite Shane over for netflix and chill, then discreetly uncover his parents' location. Though it's not part of my mission, I would love to kill his parents for killing mine.
My eye suddenly spots something glinting in the sunlight and I catch my breath. My heart races and I clench my jaw.
"Aw man, that's too bad." She frowns for a moment before brightening up again. "It's all right, and you can call me Jess." She smiles. "I'm gonna go pester someone else to go dress-hunting with me. See ya later, Kate." She chirps before bouncing off my bed and exiting my room.
I let out a breath I didn't realise I was holding when the door closes. Jess didn't seem to notice a small part of my dagger sticking out from under my bed. It must have been pushed out when I shoved my laptop under there.
This time, it's an email from Shane.
Hey Katie,
I'm looking forward to our date this Friday. Just wanna let you know that I'll be gone for awhile and should be back in a few days. Just because you don't see me doesn't mean I've migrated or cancelled our date, ok? :)
I'll be leaving early tomorrow morning so I won't have the chance to tell you in person. I'll be back in time for our date, can't wait for Friday!
Love,
Shane
Going away for a few days, on short notice? I don't think so.
I throw open my luggage and begin piling clothes into it. Not much, just enough to last me until Thursday and Friday. I stuff in my passport and a bunch of cash too. Who knows where he's going?
I check my watch, it's 4pm. I'd better get a power nap first. Setting an alarm for 10pm, I hit the sheets and fall alseep immediately. That's the thing about being an agent. When on missions, you never know when you're going to get sleep again, so you have to cherish and make use of every moment. Which is why I can fall asleep instantly when my head hits the pillows

Ring ring! My alarm goes off and I take care not to smash the prickly friend Jess put on my table. I shoot out of bed and brush my teeth. Then, I tie my chocolate brown hair into a sleek, tight ponytail. Grabbing my luggage, I sneak past Jess' room and go down to start my car. I'm going to wait outside of the building of Shane's dorm and follow him when he leaves. I'm going to see what he's up to. No on just disappears, right?

What do you think of my little Mulan reference? XD
Hey there! I'm currently in the midst of my finals/end-of-years so I'm pretty busy juggling school, dance and writing. Please have patience with me if I can't update on time or stuff like that :)
Sorry my chapters are kinda short. As I mentioned above, I'm currently really busy so I can't write super long chapters. I actually write them when I'm on the train/bus home from school. I promise you though, I'll try to write longer chapters after my exams are over!
Thanks for reading,
K <3
